Two more for August 24th. This first day cover bears the Netherlands stamp from the 1943-4 Overrun Countries issue (Scott 913).  And from the Netherland Antilles, this post card postmarked Curacao in 1936. The card bears a 1c olive green from the 1915-33 issue (Scott 46) and a 1.5c deep ultra issued August 1, 1936 (Scott 128).  |

On August 25, 1948, in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, the United States issued a 3c bright violet, perf. 10.5x11 stamp (Scott 965) commemorating the life of Harlan Fiske Stone (1872-1946). Below is the lead paragraph of a brief biography of Stone that was taken from the Arago website (read the full write-up on the Stone issue here). On August 26, 1985, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the USPS issued a 22c gray green & rose red, perf. 11 stamp honoring World War I veterans (Scott 2154). The stamp was designed by Richard Sheaff from a charcoal drawing of Harvey Dunn. Here is a first day cover of the stamp with a Worthington Stamp Club cachet.  On the same date in 1959, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the Post Office Department issued a 4c blue, green & ochre, perf. 11 stamp (Scott 133) as a tribute to farmers and ranchers who used soil and water conservation measures. The stamp was designed by Walter Hortens. This cover has one of the first day of issue pictorial cancellations first used the year prior.  On August 26, 1937, this post card showing Partridge Island at the entrance to Saint John Harbour was sent from Digby, Nova Scotia. The card bears a 2c brown, perf. 12 King George V stamp first issued on June 1, 1935 (Scott 218).  |

The 3rd Pan American Games were held in Chicago, Illinois from August 27 through September 7, 1959. To commemorate the Games, the Post Office Department issued a 10c red, white and blue, perf. 11 air mail stamp that was designed by Suren Ermoyan (Scott C56). Below is a first day cover with pictorial cancellation and Ken Boll cachet.
The 9c red orange, perf. 11 stamp of the National Parks Year set, featuring Mt. Rockwell and Two Medicine Lake, was issued on August 27, 1934 at Glacier Park, Montana.
This cover, sent from Boston, Massachusetts to Germany on August 27, 1889, bears a 2c green, perf. 12 Washington issued September 10, 1887 (Scott 213). The auxiliary mark, an encircled "T," indicates postage due.

On August 12, 1968, Great Britain released a set of four stamps featuring paintings, similar to those that had been issued in 1967. The 4p multicolored stamp of the set (Scott 568) featured a portrait of Elizabeth I, circa 1575, that had been painted by an unknown artist.
This stamp, with a circular date stamp fit for a Queen, was postmarked August 28, 1968.

OK, so I see that the Postmark calendar thread has been whacked (for whatever reason?) and that's one of the threads that I LOVED TO PIECES, so I'll just start another until the other thread is found or resurrected. OK, You know the rules of the game so post em' if you got em'. Today's date is AUGUST 30th (2013)  The Smythe cover information: It wears a Scott #114 New York Express Locomotive
Arthur H. Smythe graduated from High School in Columbus in 1869; perhaps the cover carried a graduation gift.
In the 1886-88 Proceedings of the Ohio Engineering Society, he is listed as an Associate Member and a Dealer in Mathematical Instruments, Columbus, Ohio.
In 1898, he was a member of the "Old Northwest" Genealogical Society.
In the book How the Arabian Nights Inspired the American Dream, 1790-1935, there is mention of him being a "talent agent" representing Egyptian talent agents who provided artists and merchants to work the "Streets of Cairo" exhibit at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition.

I'll add two more for August 30th: I'll begin with a first day cover for the 37c and 70c multicolored, Perf 13.5x13.25 stamps of the United Nations' World Heritage series that feature Italy (Scott 832 and 833). These stamps were designed by Rorie Katz of the U.S. and were printed in panes of 20 by Cartor Security Printing, France. A souvenir booklet was also issued (Scott 834). Corresponding issues are: UN Offices in Geneva, Scott 400-402; UN Offices in Vienna, Scott 322-324; and, Italy, Scott 2506-2507.  Next is one of my favorites (I know some collectors disapprove of First Day Cover collecting but how can you not love this one?) On August 30, 1934, the United States issued a 16c dark blue, perf. 11 stamp for the prepayment of the air postage and special delivery fee in a single stamp (Scott CE1). The first day sale was at the American Air Mail Society Convention that was being held at the Hotel Congress in Chicago, Illinois from August 30th to September 1st.  In 1936 the U.S. would issue a 16c red & blue stamp with a newly-engraved, slightly smaller seal but you are going to have to wait until February 10th to see that one unless someone else posts it before then.  |

For September 2, a postcard that is interesting to me for 2 reasons: The cancellation that says CODs give satisfaction. Apparently nobody ever told the Rolling Stones about it. The second reason is the message, that at first seemed strange, then I connected the year, 1925 during prohibition, and the fact that in Canada, you could buy booze. I hope Paul and Blanche had a good time!  |

Zuzu, I think you're correct. The period that the CDS was in use (1851-52), the non-prepaid single letter rate 1/2 oz (1851-55), and his living in Henry County (1847-1855) coincide, making him the likely recipient. Thanks!

United States: first day cover with Milwaukee, Wisconsin pictorial postmark for 1961 4c ultramarine, perf. 10.5x11, Workmen's Compensation issue (Scott 1186) with Art Craft cachet. Stamp designed by Norman Todhunter; design elements include Scales of Justice, factory, and a worker and family.  Great Britain: first day cover, with cachet and South Queensferry West Lothian pictorial postmark, for the 1964 3p black, lilac & blue, perf. 14.5x14 (Scott 418) and 6p violet black, greenish blue & carmine lake (Scott 419) set commemorating the opening of Forth Road Bridge, Scotland. When it opened in 1964, the bridge was the fourth longest in the world with a length of over 2.5 kilometers.

The reply card would have featured the same head of Grant but be inscribed "REPLY CARD."

On September 8, 1967 the U.S. issued a 13c blue & red air post postal card (Scott UXC8), for international use, in Detroit, Michigan. The postal card featured the emblem of the Commerce Department's Travel Service. It was issued in conjunction with the American Air Mail Society Convention being held in Detroit at the time.  |

September 15th. Apparently 9/15 was a day of frequent first flights. The first I have is a cover commemorating the inaugural airmail service from Seattle to Los Angeles in 1926.
The next is from the same date for the first flight Seattle to Bakersfield. I imagine that these first two were carried on the same plane.
The 3rd cover for 9/15 is Pasco, Wa. to New Jersey.
The last cover for the 15th is 1929 from Seattle to Wall St. NY. This one has an interesting Return to Sender handstamp.

Addressed to Jane C. Balderston, Calora, Maryland, Sept 16, 1910.  I cannot find any relative information on this Calora, Maryland with the only exception of a newer housing development? {Colora, Maryland} I did however find a Clara (Barton), Maryland.
