A registered cover sent from Pierceville, Indiana on this date in 1898 Interesting, the use of the upside down 5 to represent the 9. Ryan

On closer examination, I'm not convinced that an upside down "5" swas used to represent a "9":

Oct 9, 1911.
San Francisco to Orenco, Or. A Panama-Pacific expo cancellation. The expo was in 1915. I wonder what the earliest date of that cancellation was?

Here's a fuzzy one for October 10. Strokkur is Iceland's top geyser tourist attraction. It's a "reclaimed" geyser - early in the 20th century, an earthquake shifted things around underground and it stopped erupting. In the 1960s it was decided to "unblock" it and it once again erupts regularly, usually every 5 minutes or so. There is a webcam view of Strokkur where you can watch the eruptions, one of a suite of webcam views of Iceland. Ryan

I'm sorting through Icelandic stamps now, and what do I see today? A postmark from today, October 12. This stamp commemorates the 175th anniversary of Reykjavik receiving its municipal charter. Reykjavik was the first permanently settled location in Iceland in 874 AD, but it was only noted as being a rural area for hundreds of years and didn't become a town until 1786. This stamp was released in 1961 but not postmarked until 1963. Ryan

Rod, one has to wonder what would have caused the recipient to tear it open in such a manner...perhaps it held something eagerly anticipated. October 13

October, 22nd This handsome cover wears a Saint Louis, Missouri Circular Date Stamp with a rather interesting looking font & segmented "crossroads" cork cancellation. Some background information on "the Miner cover" {above} addressed to S.S. Miner (a/k/a Samuel Stillman Miner) of Maysville, Kentucky:And his connection to the Maysville Literary Institute, which appears to be an off-shoot of the Maysville Baptist Church:

October 23rdHotel Dunkle, Jersey Shore, Pa.Obverse:Reverse: Stamp is, I suspect a Scott #374 since it's usage is so late in 1911 but it is possible it could be a #357 on "blue-paper" {watermark 190} but the historic value on piece is worth way more (to me) than any intrinsic or philatelic value it may have plus, the "blue-paper" issues are common enough that another copy can be easily obtained already certified. The original building:How it looked in the 1990's before it was razed and an Arby's built ontop.:

October 24th, 1932. Ralph Kimble, aka The Stamp Man at radio station WMAQ. Apparently Mr. Kimble was fairly well know in pre-WWII philately. He authored several books and publications on stamp collecting. Can you imagine a radio show on stamps today? Oh for the good old days. . .
