What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

Post by Beryllium Guy on Jul 7, 2020 22:55:34 GMT
7th July (1904) Denmark, Sc 53, 1-øre orange definitive stamp postmarked on this date in 1904. Looking for advice on the city name: was Copenhagen ever spelled KJØBENHAVN? I can only find evidence of the København spelling (no "j"), and I could not find another city listing that seemed right. Suggestions welcome! Ryan , blaamand , vikingeck , anyone else?

Beryllium Guy - Yes, I believe Copenhagen has been spelt 'Kjøbenhavn' in Denmark. As a matter of fact modern Norwegian language is heavily influenced by Danish, and the Norwegian spelling for Copenhagen is 'Kjøbenhavn'

8 July 1919 Ivory Coast YV 51. This was issued in 1913, part of the first series of Ebrie Lagoon stamps. The postmark is from Grand Bassam, which is divided into two halves by the lagoon. During early colonial days, Grand Bassam was an important port and the economic centre of Ivory Coast. It was also the capital city from 1893 to 1896. UNESCO has listed it as a World Heritage Site.

alanl , for what it's worth, I think that you have absolutely identified the date correctly. I agree that it is an eight (8). Nicely done! Just sorry that I don't have anything for today's date to contribute. I will be back on the 10th!

René, I am delighted to see that you have posted this. This cover went to you in the Uncle Bill's Giveaway in Dec-2018. I know it, because George Dembo was a friend of my father's with whom he traded stamps and covers back in the early 1950s. I am so pleased to see this.... Thanks!
