Queen Victoria 1 cent Numeral definitive mailed on "Boxing Day" (was it called that back then?) from St. Catherines, Ontario. I haven't checked for re-entries or paper/colour varieties. It was initially issued on June 17, 1989, with 313,900,000 printed, which means lots of varieties are possible. Unitrade 75

Germany 2 mark Castle from the American & British zone issues. Posted at Hamburg-Altona. It is type II, with 7 steps inside the arch. Most of this series that I have are of the Type II variant, very few are type I with 4 steps inside the arch. I didn't bother checking for the orientation of the watermark. Scott 659a : Michel 98
This brings 2020 postmark of the day thread to a close for me. I hope everyone has a Happy New Year, no matter how you celebrate it! Just remember - this is ONE new year celebration - there will be many more.

Another trio from Germany... 10pf Water Lily from a pair for the protection of wild animals and plants, issued October 4, 1958. 20pf Industry and Tech series showing a lighthouse. This stamp issued on May 15, 1975, but did someone in Germany invent a time machine? It was used 9 years prior to it being issued in 1966! Or maybe the postal clerk put the wrong year in the canceller! I like to think it was a time machine! 55¢ Post! stamp self adhesive version, showing a Camellia, issued August 12, 2004.

January 8, 1935. The 5 öre Standing Lion is the most abundant of all Swedish stamps, but is still an interesting issue thanks to the plethora of types, perforations, watermarks and paper variants. This is a type II, perf 9 3/4 coil stamp printed on A3 paper that was issued in 1934. Postmark is from Hälsingborg 1. LBR stands for "Lådbrev"; the letter was posted in mailbox and not left at the post office.

Wow, A3 paper would make that one heck of a big stamp at 297 × 420 mm's! Sheesh! Must have been used for Christmas packages!

Is there some resource that helps one decode the dates from postmarks? For example, take a Netherlands stamp with:
2 IX 20 1949
We know the month (September) and year, but what is the date? In this case, it turns out that the postmark was on the 2nd and the 20th is irrelevant.
It would be very useful if this kind of decoding information were documented somewhere.

Second question:
i am trying to develop some sort of collection organized by dates. Ideally, it would have items from Jan. 1 sorted by year, then items from Jan. 2, etc.
The problem is that items may be of dramatically different sizes. Right now I am using stock pages for stamps, large stock pages for items like cut squares, and 8x11 plastic collector covers for covers. Of course, these are not integrated.
A second constraint is that I am continually finding items from new years of particular dates so that however they are organized my be somewhat dynamic.
Any good ideas on how to deal with this problem?

... the 20th is irrelevant. Great questions ( alanmiley ) although given that this thread is for members to post their covers, and/or stamps that have postmarks matching the month and day of their posting, it may not be the most appropriate of locations (see previous examples of others' postings).
As for the first question, perhaps a bit harsh given that the '20' likely indicates the time that the mail was cancelled and not irrelevant for the individual working that evening ;-) If you want to continue the discussion of Dutch postmarks, feel free to create a thread on the Netherlands board found here.
Happy collecting!
