Greetings from Buzâu, 120 years ago today! Buzâu used to be spelled Buzeu or Buzêu; I didn't track when or why the formalization of the â took place. It's one hour and 41 minutes northeast of Bucharest via Romanian Railways; the trains run all the time and tickets start at $4. It was an ordinary small city that got invaded a lot through the centuries. It was built up as an industrial center in the 1960s and 1970s (and, naturally, a millennium's worth of the city's historic architecture got razed in the process); it is now shrinking again, though some of the state-owned factories are still around, usually in private hands. Near Buzâu is Buzâu Land, which its promoters are marketing as an ecotourism paradise and have applied to be named a Global Geopark by UNESCO. Check out the link; this place is really quite unusual. While looking around, I found Radio Boom and listened to such local artists as "Filip" Collins and "Toma" Petty. The DJs reminded me of DJs I used to hear on Latin American shortwave stations, maybe because Romanian sounds more like Portuguese than it does any other language I'm familiar with, and they have about 50 ID jingles like Top Forty stations used to have here in the USA. Another site you can check out is Romania Radio, which lets you access a number of radio stations, including what I take to be their "cultural programming" analogues of NPR and CBC. I guess that's about it for... What's that? You wanna know about the stamp? Well, why didn't you say so?? It's Sc. 168, part of a series of 15 (with a total of two designs) celebrating the opening of the new post office in Bucharest. One of these days I'd like to do a comparison of who issued the most stamps before 1941, and I wouldn't be surprised if Romania is in the top 15 or so. Kings Carol I and II were egomaniacs about being on stamps, so there are dozens of definitive series, as well as a few long series like this one and more semi-postals than were usual in the early 20th century.

Carol II (king of Romania) had one of the largest philatelic collections in the world. In his collection was also the famous color error "the yellow Swede Triskilling banco" last sold for $2.9 million.

Coincidentally, two cancelled the same day in the same post office with the same canceller--maybe from the same cover--both by Majvor Franzén, the other great Swedish engraver working the same time as Czeslaw Slania. You can see the resemblance in the backgrounds; variations on her lozenge thing. The similarity supports the case that engraving matters more than design.
You cannot get more Scandinavian than the Röksten. As for that wood grouse, they're just bizarre. I've never seen one outside the zoo.

Toba, Japan, twenty years ago. Toba is on the Shiba Peninsula, east-southeast of Osaka and almost due south of Nagoya. The "Mie" under the name on the postmark is the name of the prefecture Toba is in. It's most famous for the Ama ("marine women") who dive for fish, shellfish, and (occasionally) pearls without the aid of scuba tanks. Toba's Web site has a fascinating and exceptionally well-written article about these women who are carrying on a tradition that has existed for a millennium or more. When I think of Japan, I think of a futuristic land with unbelievable trains, and what a contrast this is! People of the sea can be a wee bit resistant to change, but even the scallop fishermen near where I live (mainly immigrants from Portugal and especially the Azores), they all have boats by now. So I'm happy to have a postmarks from a town that straddles so many generations. 20 May 1884 Hungary Mi 26,issued in 1881.Postmarked at Karolyvaros, now Karlovac in Croatia. Ahh, you found it before I even got around to digging in! I was familiar with Karlovac and I'm sure I even have Jugoslav and Croatian postmarks from there, but for some reason I never even got a glimmer of its historical name.

Gustaf V on a F149a. The Swedes had recently received their Stickney Press from the US and still were learning how to operate it. Centering was an irritant.
I like this stamp, but it appears Gustaf didn't. That same year--1921--Postverket switched to the King-left-facing stamp. Postverket and the King stuck with that one for the next twenty years.

May 23, 1966 A cover with no US zip code from May 23, 1966 postmarked in Collinsville, VA with Scott 1213. The zip code (Zone Improvement Plan) was implemented in the US in 1963 and apparently had not become universally used yet. May 23, 1985 Another cover (postcard) without a US zip (at least the full zip), this one 19 years later the the previous one. Postmarked May 23, 1985 in Beaumont, TX with US Scott 1856. The US zip use was prevalent at this time, perhaps the "02" after TX was to mean 77702 which is a zip in Beaumont. Here is the back of the postcard, time for someone to get new shoes.

Exactly 50 years ago today, somebody in Budva mailed a letter, using a stamp that portrays a whole lot of people preparing to kill each other. Budva is in Montenegro. Archaeologists consider it the site of one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. It has been part of Greece, an early south Slavic principality called Diocletia (or Duclja), Venice, and the Byzantine, Habsburg and Ottoman Empires. An earthquake just about leveled Budva in 1979, but it has since been built back - reconstructing the medieval buildings as closely as possible. That effort has paid off, as it is the center of the Montenegrin tourist trade - which may not sound like a huge accomplishment, but the Adriatic is an absolutely prime destination. (Budva isn't all that far from the superstar destination to the north, Dubrovnik, at least as the crow flies; getting from one to another can be interesting, but people arriving in airplanes or cruise ships don't have to worry about all that.) A lot of the tourist activity takes place in bars, of course, but Montenegro's tourist Web site has some luscious photos of the historical fare. Tell them eggdog sent you, and be prepared for some blank looks.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

May 26, 1951 Esbjerg, Denmark This stamp (Scott 327) was one of a pair issued in 1951 commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Naval Officers’ College located in Copenhagen. It is now called the Royal Danish Naval Academy and s the oldest still existing officers’ academy in the world. Esbjerg is a seaport on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula. It is the 5th largest city in Denmark. 2 weeks from now I will be in Denmark for a few days but this city does not appear on my itinerary.

Tamworth UK May 27, 1904 Tamworth is a market town and borough in Staffordshire. The postmark and stamp is of no real significance but I found the hand painted postcard rather cute. The message brought to mind Downton Abbey and correspondence between high society types of that era. I have spent time trying to identify the sender and painter of the card but the initials E.M.M. is little to go on. I had thought the receiver in Wolverhampton may have been a better clue. I suspect Highfield was the name of the estate. I did find an Oaken Arms Pub in Wolverhampton. The name Brecoe gave no results but Briscoe is a known name in the area
