Let me begin by saying that this is not an original idea -- I contributed to a similar thread on another forum and found it quite interesting. This thread will involve members posting their covers, and/or stamps that have postmarks matching the month and day of their posting. For example, as I am creating this post it is August 10th in the U.S. so my contribution to the calendar thread is the following first day cover with a pair of the 5c Overrun Countries issue: Luxembourg (Scott 912) postmarked in Washington, DC on August 10, 1943. The goal is to have at least one postmark added to the thread each day -- an admirable goal that may prove as illusive as those low value, hard to find issues currently being discussed in another forum boad.

Okay...while you're all off inventorying your cancelled covers and stamps to keep this postmark calendar going, I'll extend the streak to 2 days in a row with these submissions for August 11th:
From Indianapolis, Indiana circa 1881-2, a strip of three 1c gray blue Franklins of the re-engraved design of 1873 (Scott 206).
And from Abilene, Texas in 1966, the 4c red violet precanceled Lincoln postal card (Scott UX48).

I guess folks are still checking their inventories so I'll try to keep the streak going as long as my collection will allow. It is August 12th here in Northern Virginia and today's submission was mailed from Fort Worth, Texas on this date in 1947. The cover bears a 3c brown violet, perf. 11x10.5 stamp honoring the physicians of America issued June 9, 1947 (Scott 949) that was designed by Charles R. Chickering and features Sir Luke Fildes' painting "The Doctor."

You know I was always fascinated by that thread also but the organization of my collection hasn't come as far as documenting the dates in chronological order as of yet but the thought is compelling however! So if you have a cover with today's month and day on the time/date slug in the CDS you post it here correct? So if I had one with an August 12th CDS it would go here?
I have an awesome one coming up on the 18th! but so far nothing from today.

Ditto what Jay said. I've started going through some of the stamps on piece that I received in a large ebay lot, but I haven't gotten far enough into it yet.

Jay and Zuzu,
The postmark on your cover, card or stamp should match the Month and Day that you are posting it.
I included postmark dates in my cover and card inventory so that has made it easier for me to find covers to post.
I haven't done the same with my stamps yet but I'm considering it -- this thread could provide the forcing function I need to get that effort up and running.
I'm looking forward to you joining in on the 18th as that will fill one of my gaps.
I could use some help on the 17th as well.
Also, just because a date has been covered doesn't preclude others from piling on -- that is a good thing as we all get to see a wider range of material.

Today I offer two covers from Houston, Texas. Both were postmarked on August 13, 1941. The first cover bears a 3c deep red violet Panama Canal issue stamp (Scott 856) that was issued on August 15, 1939. Coincidentally, per the corner card, Nathan Levy was a stamp dealer specializing in postage stamps of Panama and the Canal Zone. The second cover bears the 2c rose carmine National Defense issue stamp that was released October 16, 1940 (Scott 900).

Today's entry is a postal card postmarked on August 14, 1968 in Fairview, Tennessee. The 4c red violet Lincoln postal card, precanceled with 3 printed red violet lines (Scott UX48), was issued on November 19, 1962. The domestic rate for post cards had been increased from 4c to 5c on January 7, 1968. The 1c green Andrew Jackson stamp (Scott 1209), issued on March 22, 1963, was applied to satisfy the postage rate increase. The year on the cancel was difficult to read but retroReveal proved beneficial in determining it to be 1968.

Per our new clocks it is still August 15th in London so I haven't missed the window for these submissions. From Red Cloud, Nebraska, this first day of issue cover for the 10c lake Red Cloud stamp from the Great Americans issue (Scott 2175). From Beverly, Massachusetts in 1894, a mailing from the Woodbury Shoe Co. (formerly Woodbury & Clark) with a 2c carmine Washington (Scott 220). And in closing this entry, a stampless folded letter sent by the Farmers and Merchants Bank from Georgetown, District of Columbia in 1844 (I was able to determine the year from the letter content and docketing).

Steve: I just wanted to offer up some moral support for this idea. I have many, many covers, US & foreign, but they're all in storage right now. Until I figure out what else to do with them, I could use them for their cancel dates. (And this indeed may be their new-found highest and best purpose.)
But I am realistically a couple of months away, at a minimum, from being able to tackle that. (I have a project deadline in early October I need to hit first.) But I'm with you here in concept.
Thanks for doing this!

Dave, thanks for the encouragement and moral support. This is a thread that any forum member can participate in, irrespective of their longevity as a collector, the sophistication of their collecting interests, or the condition of their material. We should be seeing others contributing in the not to distant future and I look forward to you being able to join in when you can! In the interim, I'll hold down the fort as best as I can.

Two entries for August 16th: one from Spain and the other the U.S.
The 10p olive green & brown stamp (Scott 968) was issued by Spain as part of a 3 stamp set commemorating International Stamp Day on May 6, 1961.
The 4c red & dark blue stamp (Scott 1131), issued by the U.S. on June 26, 1959, commemorates the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway on that date. The stamp was issued jointly with Canada (Scott 387).

It is August 19th and I'm back in the game with a lone entry that is not directed at anyone on this forum. The first day cover from Washington, DC in 1981 is for the 18c blue & black, perf. 11 Alcoholism stamp designed by John Boyd (Scott 1927).

Here are three more entries for August 20th. We'll keep the Pacific theme going with this First Day cover of Japan's 70 yen regular issue of 1965. The stamp, Scott 750), features a Noh mask. From Houston, Texas in 1941 is this cover with a 3c deep red violet Panama Canal issue stamp (Aug 15, 1939 - Scott 856) and slogan cancel typical of the period. Last is this folded letter bearing an 1851 3c orange brown, type II Washington (Scott 10A) sent from York, Pennsylvania.

This made me curious so I looked up the history of the ship on Wikipedia. Very exciting! Among her adventures, she was bombed by Chinese forces led by Claire L. Chennault while trying to evacuate American citizens from Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese war. Chennault later got his own stamp, so I guess there were no hard feelings. ha ha Ryan

For August 22 this "Soldier's Mail" cover with "Free" frank postmarked Saint Louis, Missouri in 1945.
The corner card shows the sender was assigned to Stout Field in Indianapolis, Indiana. During WWII the Army based training and troop/supply transport operations at Stout Field so the postmark from St. Louis suggests that Captain Levy might have been on a cross-country mission when the letter was mailed.

On August 23, 1852, this stampless cover was sent from Wrentham, Massachusetts to Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the "not prepaid" rate of 5c. Prepayment of postage on domestic letters in the U.S. didn't become compulsory until April 1, 1855.

Jacob Arthur Meeks grew up at Muncie and at the age of seventeen, in 1873, was graduated from the high school there. He then became employed as a clerk in the grocery store of Maddy, Burt & Kirby and was thus connected for four years, meanwhile taking time off to take a commercial course in Miami College at Dayton, Ohio. He then went to Toledo and became employed there as a bookkeeper, but in 1880 returned to Muncie and became employed as bookkeeper in the office of James Boyce, who then still was operating his bagging factory here, and in that same year he bought an eighth interest in that concern, which in 1885 was sold to the Warren-Jones & Gratz Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Following this sale Mr. Meeks bought a half interest in the Boyce handle factory and has ever since been engaged in the manufacture of handles, thus now being at the head of what probably is the oldest continuing industrial enterprise in Muncie. This mill was destroyed by fire in April 1893, but was at once rebuilt and much enlarged. Two years later, in 1895, Mr. Meeks secured control of the handle, rivet and machinery department of this factory and has since continued the business, also operating there on East Washington Street a well-equipped general lumber mill. In 1919, Mr. Meeks took into this business as his partner, his son, Erle G. Meeks, and the business has since then been operated under the firm style of J. A. Meeks & Son and has developed an up-to-date and thriving industry. Though still connected with this firm, Erle G. Meeks is now living at Connersville, where he is the Secretary and Treasurer of the P.H.&E.M. Root Company, manufacturers of rotary blowers. He married Esther Johnston and has one child, a daughter, Sylvia. It was in 1879 that J. A. Meeks was united in marriage to Lydia J. Gray, daughter of J. M. Gray and wife, of Anderson, Indiana, and the latter of who was a member of the pioneer Shoemaker family of this region. Erle G. Meeks is their only child. - Although it is a bit difficult to make out it is indeed August 23rd.

Ok. August 24, 1937. A dpo, Lincoln, Wa. to Colville, Wa. And a postcard from Panama, on August 24, 1925. I assume that "Transito" indicates a ship in transit through the canal.
