An RPO from Yakima, Wa. to Portland, Or. What is interesting to me is that when I worked in the Yakima PO, in 1962, we were still sending stuff on the Spokane, Pasco, and Portland.

U.S. Scott 26 (1857-61) on cover postmarked in Duquoin, Illinois.
United Nations Scott 188 (6c green, black, ochre, red & blue) and 189 (20c lilac, black, ocher, red & blue) first day covers postmarked in New York, New York on September 19, 1968. The stamps were issued to publicize World Weather Watch, a new weather system directed by the World Meteorological Organization.
U.S. Scott 1278 (1c green Jefferson issued Jan 12, 1968) on Scott UX48 (4c red violet Lincoln postal card precanceled with 3 printed red violet lines issued November 19, 1962) postmarked in Bradenton, Florida on this date in 1969.

This first day cover is for the 22c granite paper Federal Republic of Germany (Scott 451) ftamp from the United Nations' flag series. The stamp was designed by Ole Hamann and printed by Helio Courvoisier, Switzerland. The stamp was issued as a block of 4 in a pane of 16 that also contained blocks of 4 of the Grenada (Scott 450), Saudi Arabia (Scott 452) and Mexico (Scott 453) stamps.

September 22Postmarked on this date in 1941 at Cameron, Texas and bearing a 3c bright violet, perf. 11x10.5 "Torch of Enlightenment" stamp from the National Defense issue (Scott 901).  The United Nations issued this envelope (Scott U2) with an embossed, 4c ultramarine "Emblem of the United Nations" on this date in 1958. The die was engraved by the American Bank Note Company, New York and the envelope was printed by the International Envelope Corporation, Dayton, Ohio.

September 24Three 2c carmine Washingtons (Scott 220) on an 1894 cover to France postmarked in Omaha, Nebraska.  Two first day covers for the 1954 3c violet Devils Tower issue (Scott 1084). The stamp commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Federal law providing for the protection of American natural antiquities.

On rare occasions stamps have been produced for use on only one day. The Uruguay 45 cent "Gaucho and Biplane" airmail is such a stamp. Issued on September 24, 1925 to commemorate the Battle of Rincon. The stamp was not sold over the counter but affixed to covers by postal clerks for use on that single day. Because of this procedure there were never any unused copies available. The second stamp on the cover features General Fructuoso Rivera who was a commander at the battle and later, in 1930, was elected the first President of Uruguay. Sept 24 1925 was the first day of issue for this stamp.  Although I do not concentrate on collecting covers I have started a sub collection of covers for stamps that were only valid for use on one day. This second cover is one I picked up this last weekend. The Heron stamp inscribed Florida was another single day usage of August 24, 1925.  |

How do you tell people you live in Fraziers Bottom?
If the rate was 5c, how come 20c? do collectors over there like blocks of 4?

September 25This 4c brown stamp featuring the Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde Park, Colorado (Scott 743) was issued on this date in 1934 as part of the National Parks Year issue.  This cover, postmarked in Brooklyn, New York on this date in 1946, bears a 3c violet "Win the War" issue (Scott 905, July 4, 1942).

September 28The tattooed King is a hard act to follow! The 4c blue & pink, perf. 11 U.S.-Japan treaty issue (Scott 1158), commemorating the centenary of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Amity, was released in Washington, DC on this date in 1960.  On this date in 1943, the 5c blue violet, deep blue, dark rose & black, perf. 12 "Flag of France" (Scott 915) from the Overrun Countries issue was released.  This cover bears a 1c blue, type V, 1857 Franklin (Scott 24) tied with a Boston "Paid in Circle" killer. The cover was sent to Asa P(orter) Morse in 1859.
