Cash-on-Delivery (COD) letter from ПОЧТ.АГ.НА.СТ.ТРИКРАТЫ / Ю.З.Ж.Д (Postal agency at station Trikraty / Southwestern Railways - Ю.З. = ЮГО-ЗАПАД) to Kavkazkaya station of Severno-Kavkaz Railways with a backstamp of Крапоткинская, Kuban (notice inverted “7” in date). The sum to be collected upon delivery was 384R 50k. The letter is franked at 4R 3k with “small heads” – 29x10k, 7x8k, 2x3k, 1x50k and 1xk. This is the correct fee according to the following calculation: 18k for the registered letter rate + 1% for the COD charge, i.e 1% of 385R (rounded-off to the next ruble).
The village of Trikraty is in present-day Voznesenskiy rayon of Nikolaev oblast in the Ukraine.
A very busy cover , beautiful wax seal. albeit, hard to mount in an album I would imagine.

A very busy cover , beautiful wax seal. albeit, hard to mount in an album I would imagine. I use the Lighthouse Optima C system for my postal history collection, so no problems exist. By the way, COD covers from the early Soviet period are not easy to find, so I am particularly fond of that cover. Even more so because it is from a small locality and because it is "plastered" with stamps to pay the appropriate rate.

February 26, 1918
Cover from Simbirsk to Kopenhagen (7/8/1918) via London (23/7/1918) – long transit time due to revolution and war. Franked correctly at the 40k registered letter rate with 35k imperf (not frequently seen on cover) and 5k imperf Arms. Standard “R” label of Simbirsk + indistinct “З” handstamp. Censored in Moscow (violet #93) and in England (resealing “opened by censor, PW 90” label). Addressed to Danish Red Cross, POW agency. Unsure what the large crayon "4" on the front is - it is possible that it somehow relates to the POW content of the cover, but this is just speculation.
Oooh, lovely "hooded" London registration strike, I just adore those. Looks like a large ovalled "R" strike on the two stamps, hidden underneath.

I guess PB supplied a role of gummed paper to the meter user.

Wow such interesting and beautiful stuff on this thread lately! I'll be glad to be able to contribute again soon. I'm sure I have a lot that could have went in here lately but I cannot lift my heavy cover binders yet. But I'm still watching. Thank you for your attention to detail as it always interests me greatly! -Jeff

March 2
From Baltimore, Maryland on this date in 1891. The 2c carmine, perf. 12 Washington, printed by the American Bank Note Company, was issued in 1890 (Scott 220). From New Haven, Connecticut in 1893. The 1c deep blue, perf. 12 stamps, also printed by the American Bank Note Company, are from the Columbian Exposition Issue (Scott 230). The earliest documented use of these stamps was on their first day of issue -- January 1, 1893. While it is not postmarked, this $50 gray brown, rouletted 5.5 documentary stamp from the 1898 issue (Scott R178) was cancelled by the Manhattan Trust Company on this date in 1899.

Jeff, I'm not sure but my assumption is that it identifies the processing facility that postmarked the cover. It may or may not coincide with the postal zone system in effect within Houston at the time.

OK, Thank you. It's quite interesting and I don't see it listed anywhere (like the postmark collectors club) so, maybe it's worth investigating further? I too have one that's not listed as well (at least that I could find?) on that Cherry Brand advert cover and has a "A" in the bottom center in the year slugs position that I find odd?
