July 1
Stampless cover (envelope) with 33mm red "PORTSMOUTH/N.H." CDS and red "5" rate stamp. The CDS was in use between 1849 and 1858; however, the rate and absence of prepayment suggest that the cover was mailed prior to April 1, 1855 when domestic prepayment became compulsory. Stamped envelope with 3c green Washington indicia from the 1874-86 issue (Scott U163) postmarked Middletown, Connecticut. From Houston, Texas in 1941. The stamp is the 3c deep red violet, perf. 11 Panama Canal issue (Scott 856; August 15, 1939). Lastly, a Greenville Junction, Maine postmark is on this first day cover noting the inauguration of the U.S. Postal Service on this date in 1971; the 8c multicolored, perf. 11x10.5 stamp bearing the USPS emblem is Scott 1396.

July 2nd, 1933
Cover from Sourakhany, Azerbaijan Republic to Nea Kokkinia, Piraeus, Greece, 13/7/1933. Received in the Athens division for registered mail (12/7/1933), in the Piraeus registered division (13/7/1933) and in Kokkinia the same evening. It was redirected (with glued-on slip) to Cairo from Piraeus (15/7/1933), where it arrived on 20/7/1933. At its initial destination the following was added in manuscript in Greek on the back flap: “Departed to unknown address”, accompanied with a signature and a number (probably those of the postal worker).
The cover received in Moscow a black rectangular “Recu a Moscou avec les soupapes mal collees. Employe...” ("Received in Moscow with the flaps poorly sealed. Employee... - it is thought by some that these markings were a sign of secret censorship). Registered with a long rectangular “R” label of Sourakhany and franked at 45k with defins (rate is 35k – possibly overweight letter).

Steve, is it usual to have an explicit "Return Postage Guaranteed" stamp for that time period? I don't remember having seen one before.

July 9th, 1923
Inflation-period cover from Sochi (on the Black Sea coast) to Moscow, 16/7/1923 receiver. The letter is registered with a black rectangular handstamp, bearing the city name, “No” and a dotted line. The registration number is written outside the rectangle by hand. Franked with 12 copies of 100R/15k perf. "star" overprint, i.e 12 rubles in 1923 values – correct franking for the period 5/7-20/8. Addressed to the "International Committee of the Red Cross".

Steve, is it usual to have an explicit "Return Postage Guaranteed" stamp for that time period? I don't remember having seen one before? A search of Jim Forte's site shows a number of other covers with the "Return Postage Guaranteed" marking -- all are from commercial entities. The sender of the cover I posted was a stamp dealer and I have a number of covers sent by him -- almost all have the handstamp on them.

The 30.5mm red-orange "GEORGETOWN/DC." CDS on this stampless letter, in use from 1832 to 1852, was applied in 1851 (from letter content and docketing). In the upper right corner, barely discernible, is what I believe to be a "PAID/3" in circle handstamp. Effective June 30, 1851 the single letter rate 1/2 ounce not exceeding 3,000 miles prepaid was 3 cents (if not prepaid - 5 cents).

Vasia, the Registration strike of dotted "R" shows in my catalogue as applied in Jeruselem (Mr E Tolkowsky Pp 170-171 ) The image looks very similar in the dots, but maybe the leg of the "R" has more dots, does this match with your covers routing? or perhaps the design is ubiquitous ? Cheers

Cheers Hello, Rod The "dotted R in circle" was also used by the Russian (later Soviet) postal system to mark registered sendings. According to one of the top experts in the field of Russian registration, the late George Miskin, it was first used in 1883 and extensively to about 1907. It crops up again occasionally in 1913, 1923-1924 and more strongly in 1935 (almost always in Ukraine). This 1936 cover bears a late use, although I have recorded a 1939 use.

Right, thanks. Now I have it. It is a Registration mark used by the Russian postal system, and as the cynosure of what I am reading, it was used by the Russians in Jerusalem, that explains what may be a slight difference in dots.
The Russian Jerusalem PO was open 1901 through 1914.
