thanks rod222 - think we've nailed this one down to Riverton Road, so matter should be sorted now, though tbh I had no idea there were so many 'roads'. I'm not entirely sure what the suffix 'road' means in these locations we've been discussing - presumably it refers to a suburban area - quite a small one too, possibly. I could be very wrong of course, and someone may put me right. thanks again.

July 14, 1970 ... A registered cover sent from the West Bank (Biq'at na-Yarden - Jordan Valley Regional Council) to Tel Aviv. Stamps:Israeli - Dum Palms, Emeq ha-Arava 2a Olive Issued: January 21, 1970 Sc. 402 Israel - Decade of Postal Actions in Israel 500p Olive, Black and Red Issued: February 25, 1959 Sc. 153 Cancels and Postmarks:Receiving Cancel: Outer ring - BIQ'AT HA YARDEN (Sorry, I can't read the rest of the outer ring - I assume it's the same thing in Hebrew and Arabic) with a line drawing of a postal vehicle Inner - 14.7.70 There are two other cancels on the front of the cover. They appear to be printed. I assume, especially since one is dated 1967, they are part of the design of the cachet. Registration Stamp: Biq'at ha Yarden 1440 Handstamp: Military Administration (at the time the West Bank was under Military Administration. This changed to Civil Administration in 1982). There are no transit or arrival cancels. Two additional copies of the receiving cancel were used on the back of the cover. Cachet:First Day Mobile Post Doar-na Biqat-Ha'Yarden

Here is 'the symbolic Mother of Switzerland' - Helvetia - on a 12 c. yellow-brown - SG CH 251 issued 1908 - 1911 ... this stamp cancelled this date in 1913. LORRAINE is a small riverside area within the centre of the city of Berne - borders the River Aare - a colourful area apparently, so bit like the 'left bank' in Paris perhaps - slightly bohemian. Quite why so many early C20 Swiss stamps were printed on granite paper I've no idea - you can see the coloured fibres running through this example.

July 15, 1940 … First Flight / First Airmail cover from Canton Island to New Zealand. Yes, It’s just a philatelic souvenir. But it’s hard to see this cover and not feel the excitement of the early days of intercontinental flight. Sometimes souvenirs remind us of the steps we took to get here. The flying boats and the clipper bases that Pan American Airways built across the pacific at Hawaii, Wake Island, Midway, Canton Island and the Philippines were the marvel of the age … the stuff of movies and newsreels and Humphrey Bogart as the pilot of the China Clipper in a 1938 Warner Brothers movie. Sadly, over the next few years the islands would be remembered for other reasons. Stamp:US – The China Clipper over the Pacific 20c Green Issued: February 15, 1937 C21 Cancels:Receiving Cancel: Four Bars Outer Ring: CANTON ISLAND, / CANTON ISLAND. Inner: JUL / 15 / A.M. / 1940 Arrival Cancel: Slogan – USE THE AIRMAIL Outer Ring: AUCKLAND. C. I. / N. Z. Inner: 3:00 PM / 18 JLY / 1940 Cachet:First Air Mail From Canton Island by Pan American Clipper To New Zealand & New Caledonia

Of the several values issued in 1946 in Guatemala, celebrating their military leader Jose Batres Montufar - this one is the 3c. in what I think is the green version (it also came in blue) - this example cancelled this date in 1948 - SG 449.

July 16, 1912 ... A picture postcard, one among millions sent during the golden age of postcards. A guy named Alex tells his friend Charllie that he's on holiday and having a lovely time. He's in upstate New York in a village near the Canadian border. The postcard is a coloured photo of Fort Niagara at the mouth of the Niagara River. Originally built in 1678 (Fort Conti) by New France as part of its westward expansion it was taken over by the British during the French and Indian War. They stayed until 1796. After the revolution the fort was not transfered to the US until the signing the Jay Treaty. At that time, British troops crossed the river and garrisoned Fort George on the opposite Canadian side. During the War of 1812, the Americans occupied and destroyed Fort George. The British returned the favour and crossed the river again, captured Fort Niagara and occupied it until the Treaty of Ghent ended the war. During WW2 it was an induction centre and later a prisoner of war camp for German Soldiers captured in North Africa. Stamp:USA - Benjamin Franklin 1c Green Issued: 1908 Sc. 331 Cancel: Outer Ring - YOUNGSTOWN N.Y. Inner - JUL / 16 / 2 PM / 1912 Postcard: OLD FORT FROM TOWER, NIAGARA Published by: Burt J. LeValley, Lockport, N.Y. Printed in Germany [In the decades prior to WW1, picture postcards were usually printed in Germany due to the quality and cost effectiveness of German lithography.]

July 17, 1974, postmarked Penang.
My knowledge about Malaysian Postal History and its postmarks is virtually non-existing, but I think the state of Penang issued its own regional definitive stamps that could be used together with Malaysian stamps.

I thought there might have been a massive error here - expecting to see the word 'Penang' - but, no ............... The name Penang comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang which means 'areca nut island':-)

postmarked this date exactly one hundred years ago today and cancelled at the Geneva Lake city of Lausanne - I think Maupas is probably the overall area, but geography not my strong point. Rather a clean and legible cancellation - nearly 'son'. The title of this stamp is 'The Mythen', which refers presumably to the two Mythen mountains which form a very panoramic view in the central area of the heart of Switzerland. The stamp is the 3 Fr. red value, issued originally in February 1918 on granite paper - SG 298. The same design had previously been issued, in blue-green, as SG 284, in July 1914. Picture of the back of the stamp also attached - shows some pencil annotation and very small letters in red - possibly L c., but not sure - all thoughts welcome, and thanks for looking. P.S. could be E C. ?

The Free City of Danzig appears to have been under the protection of The League of Nations from 1920 to 1939 - here is SG 180 - the 15 pf. grey, first issued January 1924 showing the Coat of Arms of the city, and cancelled this date in 1925. The 'Freie Stadt' translates as 'Free City', I think.

July 18, 1939 ... A cover mailed at sea on the M.S. Königin Luise ... travelling between Hamburg and Helgoland. Stamp:German Empire: Hindenburg Medallion 6Pf Green Issued: December 4, 1933 Mi Nr. 516 Cancels:Seapost, in Black (This is not a type I've see before. I'd welcome any opinions or comments) Outer ring - SEEPOST HAMBURG - HELGOLAND M S KÖNIGIN LUISE Inner - HAPAG 18 7 39 SEEBÄ[5?] POST G.M.B.[A.?] ... I assume these are postal section / ship markings Ship Cancel, in Purple Outer ring - Auf hoher See an bord MS Königin Luise [On the high seas on board MS Queen Luise] Inner - 18 JULI 1939 MS Königin Luise was a 2,000 passenger cruise ship built in 1934 for the Hamburg America Line. During WW2 she was acquired by the Kriegsmarine and used as a minelayer. In 1941 she hit a Russian mine and sank off the Finish coast. Interestingly, the earlier SS Königin Luise, a steamship built in 1913 was also taken over by the Kriegsmarine in WW1 for use as a minelayer. She was sunk by the British on August 5, 1914 - the first naval action of the war. HAPAG in the ship cancel is the name of the company that built the ship (now known as Hapag-Lloyd). She was a small commercial liner used for ferry service along the German coast. She was named after the wife of Frederick William III of Prussia. Helgoland, an island in the North Sea was acquired by Germany from the British in 1890. In the 20th century the island was used as a naval base. In 1945 the island was occupied by the British and the population was evacuated. It was returned to Germany in 1952 and the former inhabitants were allowed to return.

In a similar way to the issuing of U.K. 'official' stamps in the second half of the C19 and early C20, for I.R. - ADMIRALTY - ARMY etc. - the German Weimar Republic also issued 'official' stamps from 1920 - here are a couple from the German authorities - only one of course carries today's date which was cancelled in 1922 - the other example is mint lightly hinged (and sadly creased) and here simply to show colour variation. Regarding the German 'official' stamps, several years back SG said ................ ""There were 30 different States and Administrations which possessed the privilege of having their official correspondence franked"" - and the very first of these official issues, the DIENSTMARKE examples issued 1st April 1920, carried what was called a 'Franking Privilege No.' - this appears in both top corners of the stamps - it appears to have been the No. 21 for Prussia. After that initial set of issues - but apparently with the same date of issue - further Weimar printings of 'officials' were issued but they dropped the Franking Privilege No. and were used solely for 'all of Germany' - the two shown here fall into that category, and were issued in 1920 to 1922 - seems odd to have been issued exactly the same date as the 'No. 21' stamps. Can say that the 1 Mark dark red-orange on dull yellowish-orange appears to be Michel No. 30 - regret I don't have the SG No. The 5 Marks I'm sure is Michel 33 - sienna to blackish sienna - and again I'm missing the SG No. These seem to be fairly common stamps. Sorry this is rather long winded.
