October 6, 1916 ... and this Romanian picture postcard was postmarked as feldpost by the Imperial German Alpenkorps. The Alpenkorps was a division of specialized mountain troops largely formed from Bavarian regiments. After Romania entered the war in August 1916 on the side of the Entente, the Alpenkorps was transferred from France to fight in the Romanian Campaign. This feldpost is a re-purposed picture postcard featuring Sibiiu – a town in Transylvania. After the defeat of the Romanian Army and the occupation of most of Romania, the unit returned to France for the balance of the war. The soldier is writting to Stetten, a town on the German side of Lake Constance.

Switzerland, 1934, Scott number 225, view of the Rhine Falls, Rheineck cancellation, a municipality in the Wahlkreis (constituency) of Rheintal in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.
My apologies for posting this a day late, I've been away from my computer. To make matters worse, I first posted it on 10-04 by mistake but (hdm1950) caught it (thanks Hugh) so I pulled it off the site that day and this was my first chance to re-post it.

October 7, 1977 … and one of a great many FDCs, produced as part of a multi-year series in celebration of the pivotal events of the American Revolution, is cancelled at Schuylerville, NY and sent to a collector in Connecticut. This particular cover features the ‘Surrender at Saratoga’ when British General Burgoyne surrenders to American General Horatio Gates. The Battle of Saratoga took between September 19 and October 7, 1777. Some 7-8,000 British troops marched south from Canada into New York with the goal of dividing the northern New England colonies from the colonies in the south. Instead, having been surrounded by American forces, they were forced to surrender. This victory resulted in France entering the war on the side of the fledging United States. This was a turning point in the war as not only did it result in aid in the form of French troops, arms, supplies and loans, the British were forced to divert their own resources to deal with French threats in the West Indies and Europe. Stamp: American Bicentennial Issue USA – Surrender of Burgoyne after a painting by John Trumbull Issued on October 7, 1977 13c Sc. 1728

October 8, 1945 ... and an altered Third Reich CDS hammer was used to cancel this cover going from München [Munich] to Thüngen / Ufr. [Lower Franconia]. The altered CDS had elements from the previous regime removed and replaced by the word 'Bezahlt' [Paid]. On the other side are two handstamps in blue ink. One reads 'German Geschaftlich' [German Business] ... the other, a large single ring. The outside reads, 'Brauwirisshaftsverband Bayern' [Bavarian Brewing Industry Association]. Inside, "München 12 / Grasserstr. 1". The cover was addressed to Baron von Thüngen'sche / Castle Brewery. Regimes come and go ... beer, apparently, is forever.

October 9, 1915, a Saturday, between 9 and 10 in the morning ... and this German feldpost CDS was applied to a repurposed picture postcard. The sender, a german soldier, addressed it on Friday to Fräulein Hertha Graff in Hamburg. His dateline reads " Russland [Russia] 8/10 1916”. I assume Miss Graff is a sister or cousin of the soldier as they have the same last name based on my reading of the return military address (top of card). The card has a photographic image of the Vilnius Castle Complex with a pre-war view of the Gediminas Tower. The site was much damaged in the subsequent two wars. Based on the feldpost CDS, he is a member of XXXX Korps, a reserve unit of the Imperial German Army. Based on the postcard and the date it was sent, he is likely a member of a detachment from 40 Korps assigned to Army Group Litzmann on the Eastern Front. This Army Group included members of the XXXX Reserve Korps, units from the Ausrtian-Hungarian Army and the so-called Army of the Bug (named after the Bug River). Army Group Litzman served in what is today Poland and along the Eastern Front with Russia. Cancel: Feldpost CDS Outer Ring - K.D.Feldpostamt / XXXX.ReservekorpsInner - -9.10.15. 9-10 V / aMilitary Stamp:Outer Ring - Kgl.Preuss.Etap-Fuhrpark-Kol.No ... [Royal Prussian Tranportation and Communication Supply Column Number ... ] Inner - Briefstempel [Postmark] Postcard: Front: Wilno / Góra Zamkowa [Vilnius / Castle Mount - not sure of the translation] Image of Gediminas Tower Back: [Series Number] 11-2227 Published by K. October 10, 1917 .... and a Niagara Falls, Ontario duplex cancel was applied to this Valentine & Sons postcard of the nearby Lundy's Lane Battlefield Monument next to the cemetery on Drummond Hill. It was sent by Dave Susy to Mrs Frank Ward at Sodus, NY about 200KM east across the border. He writes, "I'm out here on the farm helping them with the peaches. I load the on the waggons and unload them on the trains, also pick and pack, I love it. It's a wonderful farm, 80 acres of peaches. Has even your orchard out there beaten. Remember me to Frank." What's interesting is that Valentine's printed description of the monument on the postcard is so long it takes the entire area available for messages. Dave wrote sideways, over top of the printing, with thick pen strokes, to ensure his message stood out. Stamp:Canada: George V - Admiral Issue (1911-25) 2c Carmine Unitrade 106 Cancel: Single Ring Duplex [Edit: Machine Cancellation: Model B Universal Machine / Dater Hub + 7 wavy lines] Thanks rod222Outer - NIAGARA FALLS ONT.Inner - OCT 10 / 3PM / 1917

Hi Hugh Cancel: Single Ring DuplexPolite suggestion. This cancel is an "Machine Cancel" not a duplex Happy to be corrected if a Canadian term you use. rod222 You are correct ... my bad. A year before WW1, Niagara Falls rented a Model B Universal Machine at C$150 per year. The exact date of the contract is apparantly in some doubt but it was certainly in place by the time of this cover. Probably from 1913. LKU is April 11, 1918. (Source: Postal History Society of Canada) Thanks for pointing this out. Much appreciated. I've updated my earlier post (and my album page). [Edit: Rod ... You beat me to it (smile). I posted this before I saw that you already found the same information. Again, thanks ... I appreciate your efforts.]
