October 17, 1970 ... and a "first day of issue" cancel was applied to this Art Craft souvenir envelope on the 150th Anniversary of Fort Snelling ... with Sc. 1409. A mundane FDC that was never postally used. It was the start of the 1970s and (IMO) the beginning of the long decline of FDC collecting. By 1975, the Franklin Mint would get involved and, well, unposted FDCs would soon be sold in bulk and at ridiculous prices. Now, you can buy binders full of these late century covers for a few dollars. But, that's another story. After the War of 1812, the US built a chain of forts along the US / Canadian border in the West. The Treaty of Ghent had agreed on the 49th parallel as the border with British North America. Canadian traders were restricted from operating south of this line and the new Forts would, among other things, make sure this happened. Fort Snelling was one of these frontier forts. It was constructed in Minnesota between 1820 and 1824 by Col. Josiah Snelling (his name is spelled wrong on the cover).  |

10am on October 20, 1908 ... and a cancel was applied to a picture postcard in Kingston and sent to Tamworth ... both in Ontario, Canada. It also has a nice arrival cancel dated the same day. Tamworth is about 50KM NW of Kingston.  It’s a Valentine & Sons card (Nr. 101,125). It shows Fort Frederick in Kingston with the Royal Military College in the background. This image is a common one and used on many of their postcards over a few decades. What's different about this one, however, is that it's been coloured to simulate a night view. They've added a moon (which is a long way from where it should be) and a few 'stars' as well. A wonderful Edwardian example of photoshop (smile).  |
