Some posts remind me of the reason I do a lot of these. Partially to join in and contribute. Partially to break away from the river pouring through my weekday, a 15.00 alternative to a coffee break. Suddenly concentrating on stamps, images, posts and catalogue numbers; not connected to anything. Just wondrous. So indulge me a couple from this day, 29 October.
The first is a Swedish commemorative from the series issued for the 1924 UPU Congress they hosted, with a personal favorite cancellation, Lidingö Villastad, then the name for the suburb across the water, just outside Stockholm.
The second got my complete attention; a Germany commemorative for the Pforzheim jewelry and watch industry, this one actually cancelled in Pforzheim. Not a brilliant cancellation, but a long wait for that combination. An oddity of the stamp is the anniversary it commemorates, the 225th? That's pretty arbitrary. Maybe somebody influential was determined.
And with that, back into the river for another swim.

FDC 30 October 1952 sent from Port Moresby, now the capital of Papua New Guinea, to Yule, one of the islands making up Papua, now an Indonesian province. The Territory of Papua and New Guinea, officially the Administrative Union of the Territory of Papua and the Territory of New Guinea, was established by an administrative union between the Australian-administered territories of Papua and New Guinea (the latter being a United Nations trust territory administered by Australia) in 1949. The territory constituted the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. The western half was Papua, part by the Dutch East Indies. On 30 October 1952, the territorial government issued a 15-denomination set of engraved pictorial stamps (Scott #122-136). Four of the low denominations are on this FDC: the chocolate 1p “Buka headdress” (#123), the deep ultra 2p “Youth” (#124), the orange 2 1/2p “Bird of Paradise” (#125), and the dark carmine 3 1/2p “Chimbu headdress” (#127). In December 1971, the name of the Territory changed to "Papua New Guinea" and in 1975 it became the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. (Historical info from Wikipedia; I hope I got it right!)

October 30, 1958 ... and a US slogan cancel was applied in Bangor to a picture postcard of Fort Kent, Maine. The postmark is a bit hard to read but since a 3c stamp was used we can reason it out. The postcard rate was 2c until August 1, 1958 when it changed to 3c. The 3c rate was moved to 4c on January 7, 1963. A review of the cancel suggests that the year is either 53, 58, 63 or 68 ... 53, 63 and 68 are all out of range, therefore it must be 58. Under magnification, it looks like 58 to me. Fort Kent is a tiny border fortification in the North of the State of Maine. There was a time when there was a dispute between Britain and the US about the location of the border between the State of Maine and the province of Quebec.

31 October 1951. Six deep blue 7 1/2p Sc. #239 on an air mail and registered 11x23 cm envelope marked "First Day Cover" by the sender. It travelled from Exeter, South Australia via Port Adelaide, arriving in Tacoma, Washington USA on 5 November. The cover probably held stamps being sent to my dad from a correspondent who lived in Ethelton, South Australia, a suburb of Adelaide.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

November 1, 1935 This stamp from the Canadian King George V Silver Jubilee set features a SON cancel from my hometown of Liverpool, Nova Scotia. The set was issued on May 4, 1935 and this stamp is a Scott/Unitrade 213. I found the stamp mounted in a collection given to me by a friend recently. At first glance there was nothing much of interest in the collection. It goes to prove that with a little work you can make something out of nothing.

November 1, 2018 ... and three special pictoral cancels from Edinburgh were placed on this Christmas 2018 FDC. With all the post boxes, I suppose it was also a reminder to mail early for the holidays. As long as we're talking about mailing early ... I picked this up last Saturday at a local stamp show. Looks like it's from just after the end of WW2.
