October 25th: Mailed from Jamestown, New York in 1941, this cover bears a pair of the 3c bright violet National Defense Issue stamp (Scott 901). The perf. 11x10.5 stamp was issued on October 16, 1940 and features the Torch of Enlightenment. Postmarked in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1944, this cover with air mail etiquette has both a 3c violet, perf. 11x10.5 Transcontinental Railroad issue stamp (Scott 922 issued May 10, 1944) and a 5c blue violet, dark red & black, perf 12 Overrun Countries Issue: Albania stamp (Scott 918 issued Nov 9, 1943). The final submission is this cover with a 2c carmine, perf. 12 Washington from the 1890-1893 American Bank Note Company issue (Scott 220) that was postmarked in Boston, Massachuessetts in 1893.

October 26:This first day cover with the 5c Blue violet, blue, dark rose & black, perf. 12 Overrun Countries Issue: Yugoslavia (Scott 917) was postmarked in Washington, DC in 1943. This cover with A. Coburn. Sons & Co. corner card was postmarked in Wolfsboro, New Hampshire in 1895. The stamp is a 2c carmine, type III, perf. 12 Washington (Scott 267) that was issued in May 1895. This cover with Cratty Bros. Fuller & Gallup corner card was postmarked in Peoria, Illinois in 1887. The stamp is a 2c red brown, perf. 12 Washington (Scott 210) that was issued on October 1, 1883. Judging by the arrow added to the cover, a previous owner must have found the killer portion duplex handstamp particularly interesting.

October 27Issued this date in Tuscon, Arizona in 1958, the 4c green, yellow & brown, perf.11 forest conservation issue stamp (Scott 1122) was designed by Rudolph Wendelin and printed (Giori press) from plates of 200 subjects in four panes of 50. The stamp also honored Theodore Roosevelt, a leading conservationist, on the centenary of his birth. October 28thThe 1970 6c multicolored, perf. 11x10.5 Anti-Pollution issue focused on the problems of polution. The stamps (Scott 1410-1413) were designed by Arnold Copeland and Walter DuBois Richards. This cover was postmarked in Calais, Maine on this date. The white stamped envelope with 2c red Washington was issued in October, 1883 (Scott U227). The 2c vermillion, perf. 12 Jackson (Scott 183) was issued in 1879 Here is a stampless cover for October 28th with a Gales Ferry, Connecticut CDS (30mm). The ASCC only reflects use of this style of postmark in 1854; however, I believe this cover was posted in 1855 because the letter content was written on "Thursday" Oct 25th -- October 25th fell on a Wednesday in 1854. The addressee, Augustus Prentice was born in New London County, CT and established a law practice in New York in 1851, specializing in commercial and corporation law. He was married to Catharine A. Browning at Gales Ferry, Connecticut, in June, 1855.

October 29:
Here is another white stamped envelope with a 2c red Washington (Scott U227) and Calais, Maine postmark that was mailed from/to the same individuals as the October 28 cover I posted with the 2c Jackson. This cover with Early & Horn Fire Insurance corner card was postmarked Detroit, Michigan in 1885; it bears a 2c red brown Washington (Scott 210) which, as of July 1, 1885, paid the 1 ounce rate to all parts of the United States. Postmarked New Haven, Connecticut in 1895, this cover has a Baldwin & Lamkin corner card and 2c carmine, type III Washington (Scott 267). The addressee, Harold F. Blake of Haverhill, Massachusetts held several patents related to shoe making.

Jeff, I'm afraid the cover is not for sale. It is the only Scott 150 in my collection and my goal is to eliminate catalog numbers from my want list rather than adding them to it! If it is any consolation for you, here is a look at the backstamps.

October 31These first day of issue covers with the 1944 3c deep violet, perf 11x10.5 stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the motion picture industry (Scott 926) were postmarked in New York, New York and Los Angeles (Hollywood Station), California, respectively. The second cover overpaid the 8c domestic air mail rate (all routes, per ounce) that was in effect from March 26, 1944 to September 30, 1946. This cover with Ward, Hayden & Satterlee corner card, postmarked New York, New York in 1898, bears a 2c copper red, perf 12 "Farming in the West" stamp (Scott 286) from the Trans-Mississippi Exposition Issue. The exposition was held in Omaha, Nebraska from June 1 through November 1, 1898. The stamps of this set were issued on June 17, 1898. The spread field with halyard flag cancel is from an American Postal Machine Company machine with Type B (split year) dial.

As I dig through various piles of stamps, I set aside any that I happen to notice with cancellations coming up on the calendar in the next couple of days. I've finished sorting through a big group of off-paper Iceland, and on my last day with them, this stamp popped up with an October 31 cancellation. This is a 1989 Europa issue showing children playing by the ocean. Iceland is a seafaring country built on the fishing industry, and swimming is a compulsory school subject for all Icelandic children as a preparation for a life on the sea. Times have changed and fishing is no longer the single dominant economic force in Iceland, but the love of the water remains. Ryan

The 5c domestic air mail rate (all routes, pwe ounce) was in effect from October 1, 1946 through December 31, 1948. The 5c blue violet, red, light blue & gray, perf. 12 "Korea" stamp (Scott 921) from the 1943-44 Overrun Countries issue was issued on this date in 1944. This cover was sent from Hemlock Grove, Ohio on this date in 1891. The stamp is an 1890 2c carmine, perf. 12 Washington (Scott 220).
