In looking at my Czechoslovakian airmails, I discovered this: This is C3. It's supposed to be violet. It's a light rose. I can't find it in Sanabria, even as a proof or essay. Is it a changeling? Below is Czechoslovakia C3a. I presume it is the correct color.

The C3a base stamp is genuine & should be a red violet The overprint by all accounts appears correct As for the other one, color variations in these are extreme - here's 2 for example So what is it? It is genuine What strikes me from the scan is how perfect the plane outline is, no smears or over-inking - typical of a trial or proof that I have seen on light backgrounds I can't tell from the scan - is the plane very dark green Sanabria won't be much help here - Pofis which I do not have is THE Czech catalog

The bottom part of the overprint (the denomination) on C3 is definitely dark green. Harder to tell with the airplane. However, I assume they were struck at the same time with the same ink, so it must be all dark green.
The overprint on C3a is definitely dark green.
The color difference between the two stamps is really striking. Can't imagine why I never noticed it.
Anyway, thanks for the help.

A little more digging in my archives & found 2 more trial prints Strong resemblance to yours Trials are not uncommon and there are a LOT of types and colors on failed regular sheets, trimmings, blank paper, cardboard, various denominations - a field on its own

They are really clear. How do you tell the diference between a trial print and a P.O. stamp?

I have seen many of these on auctions and 99/100 The plane is very clear The stamp it is on is often faded They are on the wrong denomination or even another series The plane might be green , red, brown, blue, black or some shade in between It may be on a medium that was not stamp paper
