  British Solomon Islands Protectorate was first declared over the southern Solomons in 1893, when Captain Gibson R.N., of HMS Curacoa, declared the southern islands a British Protectorate. Other islands were subsequently declared to form part of the Protectorate over a period ending in 1900. Short History • Established 15 March 1893 • Tripartite Convention 14 November 1899 • Renamed 22 June 1975 • Self-governing colony 2 January 1976 • Independence 7 July 1978 Now known as simply the Solomon Islands   SG 2 Many forgeries of this series exist but they can easily be recognized by the closeness of the canoe to the land and the oar touching. A very attractive first day cover for the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Registered Letter postmark, 30 Nov 1937 and hand-stamped registration mark from Tulagi. Sent to Manchester, England via Sydney, Australia.   |
