Not much stamping this weekend as my daughter and I went to Atlanta to see the Braves play the Reds but this arrived on Friday by way of eBay. I’ve recently taken a great interest in the stamps of Britain and thought it only fitting that they should be housed in a Stanley Gibbons album. The problem is that no one in the US (that I could find anyway) stocks them and postage from the UK is outrageous. I found this album, which is in excellent condition, complete with around 800 stamps on eBay and pulled the trigger. The stamps were basically a bonus as the album was what I was after. The stamps are all used and, with a few exceptions, are complete from around 1950 until 1980. The album ends in 1980 and I plan to purchase Scott pages and a binder to cover the years 1981-2000. I know, why not print Steiner pagers, after all, I have the CD? The truth of the matter is that I prefer illustrated pages for my primary collections. The only thing that I don’t like about the SG album is that they have Machins on the same page as commemoratives. I was hoping that the Machins would be on seperate pages so I could remove them as I plan to print out Adminware’s basic album. The basic album will suite my needs well as I don’t plan on getting too deeply into Machins. Now, I’m off to search unpacked moving boxes for my Harris Canada album, which I haven’t seen since moving here a few years ago. Yes, even after a few years, we still have some unpacked boxes. The stuff in them couldn’t be too important, though, because, with the exception of my Canada album, the stuff in them evidently hasn’t been missed.

angore... I had never considered using the Elmer’s Craft Bond glue sticks. I have been meaning to try 3M Scotch Double-Sided Scrapbooking Tape. Some posters on other forums have really been impressed by it. It is acid free and removable. Some people are even using it in place of hinges, but I won’t go that far. I’ll just stick to using it on mounts.

I am so afraid of using any glue or tape in my albums. I've seen what glue and scotch tape has done to older albums. I wonder what using either of the above would look like in 30 years. Yellowed, cracked? Who knows. Think I'll stick to my hinges and mounts that were made for this hobby. It took me a long time to trust Pure Citrus on self-adhesive stamps.

For what it is worth, I am just doing limited experiments at the moment and like everything your experience may vary. I would not apply to back of stamps. You can consider my test as home made "self-adhesive stamp mount". Of course, for mint self-adhesive stamps the jury is still out on longer term stability - 50+ years. Some early ones have already shown ill effects.

So I went out & bought some Citrus cleaner, but obviously the wrong stuff. I ended up destroying a bunch of Machin's I subjected it too. I bought a spray bottle of cleaner, but I am guessing that's wrong. Maybe something like this instead... concentrated citrus? Expensive, but... How exactly do you citrus your stamps?

brightonpete I'm not sure what you bought. I use an air freshener called Pure Citrus. You might try Amazon. It has to have pure citrus oil in it. No harsh chemicals. How I do it: Lay the stamp on paper face down on a paper plate. Spray the back of the paper with a short burst. A lot goes a long way. Let it set for a moment. Peel the paper off the stamp. Take a straight edge (some use an old credit card. I use an old dull knife) and scrap across the back of the stamp making sure you get all the sticky stuff off. I then set the stamp on a paper towel. I take another paper towel and just wipe the back of the stamp to get the remainder of citrus and sticky stuff left. I then set the stamp off to the side to air dry. Hope this helps.

They sell plastic razor blades at the hardware stores in the paint dept. They work really good for this. They don't have a rel sharp edge, but scrape excellent.

That? Wow, I thought the pure stuff was what was needed. I bought a spray bottle and used WAY too much! I look for the aerosol later today. Thanks, Jack ( coastwatcher)

Does dreaming about a stamp idea count? Background: I am a mechanical engineer working in R&D industry and traveled a lot years ago.
The dream was that I was visiting an engineering project in KUT (Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika). The term sticks in my mind. It was supposedly a factory sitting on border of all 3 countries on the border (not obviously accurate).

No stamping for me today, I spent a few hours lifting a decorative gravel path riddling the gravel, raising the soil level underneath then laying labndscape fabric before then put all the stone back again. One bucket full at at time, Just under a cubic metre of gravel. Stone is heavy man. . Folks when sending to India make the item look like a normal piece of mail between family members that way it gets ignored. be well all

A plastic putty knife works good as well. brightonpete ....this is what you should be looking for: Right, Pure Citrus gets recommended a lot, but my luck with it is poor. Yes, with orange oil and labor the glue can be removed. But it also washes away water-soluble cancels. Turns out water-soluble cancels are orange oil-soluble, too. Ouch. Another solvent that gets mentioned is Bestine. All that seems to do is evaporate. It's saving grace is it reportedly burns explosively.
It would be wonderful to strip those irritating cut squares from my album. But for now, it looks like victory for the Gods of Glue.

Bestine is also a skin irritant. I'll pass on that one. If I just spray the backing paper and let it soak in, that should work. I'll give it another go and see what happens. I'm searching online to see if it is available & in stock at local shops. Here's one result! It doesn't seem to be available in Canada. At least the major store do not have it. They only show me furniture. Why furniture when looking for a specific air freeshener? Who knows!

It didn't take long to be able to peel the paper of the test stamp, a $1 green Liberty from the USA. But it left a mess behind & in trying to clear that off, well... another one bites the dust. I'll leave them alone. The rest of the American self adhesives are on cardboard, mailings from the APS StampStore.

I bought 3 Officers letters, covers with letters from a Lieutenant in the British Army at Sebastopol in the Crimea war of 1854-56 to his Father in Edinburgh ………………………..a year ago!
I finally got round to spend a few hours transcribing his handwriting and then mounting the letters and envelopes on sheets for display. 2 done and one still to go .
Like I say in another thread, "postal history is not just Stamps collecting" In fact these covers do not have stamps just a Manuscript " 3", for "threepence" the officer letter rate. Soldiers and NCOs were only charged one penny.

brightonpete, After I remove the paper from the stamp, I apply a little more pure citrus to the adhesive (usually by just moving it around in the excess that resulted from over spray. Then I'll scrape the remaining adhesive off with a credit card like object (I've been using my Vidiforms perf guage). After that, I wipe the back of the stamp with a tissue to remove any remaining residue. Using that approach, I've never had the need to apply talc to the back. I probably should have mentioned up front that I use an oversize laminated card of the junk mail type as the work surface.

I’ve been preparing for those cold days ahead when I’ll be sitting in the house all day. Two days ago, I ordered a large, worldwide accumulation from Jay Smith & Associates and it arrived today. My hat’s off to Jay and his helpers for getting it to me in Kentucky from North Carolina in just two days. Awhile back, I sent angore , who lives in the general vicinity of Jay Smith, a letter and it took it two weeks to arrive. How can the USPS deliver a box weighing around 25 pounds in two days going one way, but it takes them two weeks to deliver a first class letter going the other way? OK, enough USPS bashing. As stated above, my accumulation weighs in the neighborhood of 25 pounds and the box measures 12”X12”X18”. It consists of 4 worldwide albums (1933-1958) as well as hundreds of glassines and bags full of both on-paper and off-paper stamps. I just glanced through it today as I’m saving it for cold weather but, the newest stamps that I saw were from the 1980’s. I think it’s enough to keep me occupied for awhile and am planning on getting at least two similar accumulations before cold weather sets in. I really like how Jay did the postage. It cost $27.20 to ship it and he placed several full and broken mint sheets (mid-1960s to mid-1970s) inside a plastic bag and taped them to the box after they were canceled. I had heard of some dealers doing this but this was my first time experiencing it.

I have started to mount Belgium on specoal made pages by Jon ( blaamand). Lots of shades to look for but I have to wait until I get a proper light in the stamproom (6000 kelvin) I vould like to show some scans but my antivirus program has decided that my profile on imggb is a dangorus place to be. Al other profiles are ok to wisite 🙄 But I managed to fiks my printer so now it prints even thick paper without making stripes and spots all over.

... I vould like to show some scans but my antivirus program has decided that my profile on imggb is a dangorus place to be. Al other profiles are ok to wisite 🙄 ... stamphinger has encountered the same problem. Are you using Avast as your antivirus program? Some searching on Google revealed a similar issue encountered by Avast users in 2011 -- the glitch was with Avast and the fix was to wait until they had resolved the issue and then run an update. To remind, the TSF Image Host (the "upload images" button) remains an option for those who request an account.

Can you make sense of this one for me? Nice, cover from Hamburg to Gävle, sent 5 May 1875 and addressed in black ink by someone with an excellent hand. And as you see, most of the name and address has been removed, erased with artistic perfection. Only the impression is left, scratched into the paper, and a wee trace of ink. How was that trick accomplished? If I tried that, it would look like a horse licked it.

Complete Germany (everything) and Ecuador Scott 2020 pages arrived in the mail today. Yay. But look at that envelope. Besides the Prexie being torn, what else is wrong with it? Another one without cancels. I suppose that's better than pen strokes for a cancel. Due to its size & flexibility, and that it was coming up here to Canada, why bother... That's all that was in the mail today.
