This e-how link implies that the first post office boxes were offered in France in 1653.

BTW I pay AUD $85 a year for mine. That's fairly cheap! The smallest box I can rent at the post office here (approximately 4" x 6" x 14") costs CAN $150 per year. If I lived closer to the centre of the city, it would be CAN $172. Ryan

Thanks Zuzu, that seems to address the query, some sites I went to mixed Lock Boxes with Pillar boxes. Ryan: Does that encourage you to move to Australia perhaps

Ryan: Does that encourage you to move to Australia perhaps Hmmm, I remember one of the Aussies mentioning somewhere on one of the stamp forums that his electricity bills in the depths of summer are around $800 per month. I think I had better stay put ... Ryan edit - link to Canadian post office box rental prices

I just did my power consumption over several years on another forum. 952 days, averaged 712 units per 2 month electricity (no gas) @ .29c / unit = $206 per 60 days = $3.44 per day. Still coming ?

$3.44 per day. Still coming ? Ah, now that's more civilized. I can't remember for sure who it was who posted the high figures - maybe KG5? Somebody from Queensland, I think. I don't do too well in high heat, so Australia has never been an attractive long-term destination. Too hot! A British friend of mine has relocated to Darwin - I don't know how he can put up with it, I would melt. I could maybe handle Tasmania, but then you mainlanders would just make fun of me. ha ha Ryan
