I don't generally go in for first day covers, as I've said here repeatedly. I find them overproduced and lacking that 'one of a kind' quality that I like. Having said that, I do have a few, many of which are homemade. One of yesterdays 'accidental' wins was a binder of US FDCs, some of them older, which are nice and many homemade, but newer than I like. But a bunch caught my attention. There are 18 sent to W. (Walter) E. O'Hara of Nashwaaksis N.B. between 1968 and 1971. All are homemade, assumedly by Mr O'Hara. Many have rubber stamped 'cachets' reading 'FIRST DAY COVER', 'Commemorative Stamp' and some the year and event. I do wonder if he didn't just take blank FDCs, with the stamps and first day cancellation, and add his own flourishes. But, there are a half dozen that are really unique (possibly literally) These are on home made envelopes with what look like photocopied cachets. The backs of the envelopes even show black lines where he cut out the envelope shape. Here's one. These may be keepers, though I'm still not sure. They do pass my expiration date of 1960. Interesting just the same.
