Here is another Elmer Long cover used to carry one of his Handbooks to a customer with an advertising cachet by artist John Coulthard, circa 1939/40.

Circa 1951? The sign "Royal Festival Hall" suggests a 1951 date as that was the year of the festival and the year the hall was built.

There also was an international stamp exhibition in London in 1950. Is that the date you are looking for?

I'd was going to say 1956, but I do believe it is 1960.

1960 it is !! The two clues are those found by stamphinger. The Royal Festival Hall has hosted a number of Philatelic Exhibitions but only one International....1960. Lovely to see the old window of Gibbons. For those who say Stamp Collecting is a 'dead' hobby, look at the window today !!

Michael, thanks for this great post, I love it! I have never seen this illustration before but I do indeed know the story.... This is a short account of the story that I have borrowed from a stamp dealer's website. Great post, Michael, thank you very much for that!

Well, Michael ( Londonbus1), thanks for the added info on the old "Cape Triangulars" story. As your reference appears on the Gibbons site, I imagine that there is a better chance that it is more accurate than the version I found. It is clearly the stuff out of which legends are made. On the other hand, if the Gibbons' website version is correct, then the illustration you posted has certainly taken some liberties, as what is shown there appears to be much more a counter in a shop than a large dining room table in a back room, at least to my eye.... I used to think that this story was apocryphal, but now I am starting to wonder about that!

Perforation gauge and stock-file from the stamp-shop "Francisco del Tarré" on 78, Via Layetana St. of Barcelona. This track of the street bore that name on the 1939-1979 years (prior to 1939 and after 1979, it's "Pau Claris"). The name of some of our streets, depends on who's ruling...
But, for the look I would rather date on the 1940-1960 period.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I arrived in Cuba this evening as I work my way through the few hundred envelops from the big collection. Nothing spectacular to report but some of the UK members may remember the stamp dealer William Frazer(Stamps)Limited. They folded in 2012. A pretty good run having incorporated in 1938. This little free gift of stamps was in the Cuba envelope. Here is a link about the company. find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/00347921

Today's mail brought me a catalog from Sgt. Grit Marine Specialties and I did a classic double take when I looked at its cover. Whoever designed it utilized artwork from a WW II patriotic cachet on a 1943 Porto-Server cover.
Porto-Server produced and sold a series of at least a dozen different humorous patriotic cachets featuring service men. Sgt Grit sells Marine Corps related clothing and memorabilia. The Porto-Server cover features Santa in an Army khaki uniform. A cover is also available with Santa in Navy blue. Sgt Grit's catalog shows him as in a modified Marine uniform and enhanced Christmas tree. An image of the catalog cover and the cover from my Porto-Server cover are below. I don't yet have the Santa in Navy blue cover yet.
An interesting coming together of stamp/cover collecting and contemporary advertising.

Advertising bags and cards, these for Britain's 'Stampex' events, the National show. The bags, sometimes printed in various sizes were given to each of the dealers' stands by the organizing committee. The cards, advertising upcoming events, were left at the entrance and other relevant points around the venue.

Britain's Royal Mail have mini card 'posters' produced for new issues for display in Post Offices and events. When they started and finished this practice I have yet to ascertain. I have a large group but will show just this one.

What better way to advertise than to produce your own chocolate wrapper !!!! Gibbons produced these sweet treats as part of the freebie bag for visitors to the main Exhibition at 'London 2010, A Festival of Stamps'. Each visitor was given a 'goody' bag upon entry which included mostly auction and price lists but also the odd....er......goody !! The chocolate bars were also offered at various points around the Horticultural Hall during the 'Philatex' bourse. The idea was repeated on another occasion some years later for the Annual Stampex show. The wrapper on that occasion was advertising Stampex and the chocky wrapper was white. I have one but cannot put my sticky fingers on it !
