Superman was really an orphaned alien from a planet of super beings. Batman was a rich kid who lost his parents to gun violence. Spider-Man got bitten by a radioactive spider... So what's the origin story for this forum? I haven't been a member for a super long time, but I've really enjoyed my time here. Nice mix of good stamp and collecting information and socializing. More and more I'm finding this to be the perfect balance for my tastes. But I know that there were several forums around before TSF started. And many of us participate in all the forums. So who started this one? Why? What's the unique thing that the founder(s) were after that prompted TSF's creation? I guess I'm hoping that, by learning where we've been, it will help me (and other new members) get into the swing of things quicker. Mark PS (A link is as good as a reply if this has been covered. I did a lot of reading before posting!)

Mark, I'm sure Jack and Steve will jump in but in a sense it was because of experiences like my own(and others)where when posting at other "places" I was ridiculed,be it for lack of tech skills or collecting interests.Such conduct will never be welcomed here. This forum is set up as a sharing, caring, safe place to promote knowledge and have fun without the drama.Did I get that on target Steve ??

Frog, I will chime in and say you are spot on! We may get a little ticked at another member, but it really is not tolerated here so therefore it is not here. So many of the members have helped me along the way and I appreciate all of you. This is a safe place where nobody will put you down for lack of knowledge. Warm fuzzy feelings here, thank you so much for starting this site, Jack and Steve.

Jack & Steve may have their own thoughts. From my "perspective:" I belonged to a local club but the membership was dwindling (down to 20) & the meetings were always the same with no interest in what I collected. I finally left when they had an auction and I contacted the auctioneer that I had the 2014 Unitrade, Scott Spec.2009, older GB commonwealth, set of Billig's many other catalogs - I was told they were only looking for modern catalogs and those were old & trash bin material I went online & found the big Ausssie one, seemed they had a lot of info but it was also about 1 temper-mental person selling his wares and a few critical trolls I then joined the large US one but it also had a lot of critical members & some "expert" trolls. I then joined Stamporama - it seemed fine but then the Great Revolution occurred with plenty of drama and the members would continually hijack my threads, go off subject and start their own. The mod had no issue with that. Maybe some day we can have an approval section here - seems to be the big drawing card. Anyway, this site has something for everyone at any level, no trolls or soap operas and I have a feeling none will be tolerated.

Wow, thanks for sharing your thoughts. They certainly parallel my experience here. I'm a member of most, if not all the forums, and have been an on again, off again member of one since the very beginning. Each board has it's own tone, that's for sure. I really like the vibe here. For me, it's the perfect balance and what a local club should be. Some of you have some gems and don't mind showing them off, but not in a 'my stamps are awesome, yours don't compare' way. Others can go deep in areas I have little interest in, like Cinderellas or re-entries on older Canadian stamps. There's space for this, plus a huge DIY section too. And if I want to share 1/3 filled pages of common stamps on Steiner pages, there is room for that too. Which I think is awesome. Even though I tend to use the 'new posts' view most, I really appreciate the thought that went into the board structure. It really makes sense to me. And even though many of us are on all the forums, there's still an overall tone that is different than many. More inclusive, maybe, but more focused on stamps and collecting for sure. I labeled this thread "Origin Story" rather than "Why I Like TSF" because I was curious about who started this and why? But maybe it doesn't matter. The fact that one can hang out here and feel comfortable without knowing who started it is a credit to the community here. And "why"? Maybe that's irrelevant too. It is what it is and I like it. I'm off to look at postmarks. Mark

Whoops. I should be more clear about my comment on "I have no interest in Cinderellas and Canadian re-entries." I had no interest in them before I read about them on TSF. As I learn more about them through the forum I'm finding them fascinating.
While I may not start a Cinderella collection or go buy a microscope, I really appreciate that folks are sharing their passions here in all flavours.

All I remember is that there was some 'big drama' on some stamp forums, and some folks decided to leave for better or worse. Eventually Jack set up TSF, sent out some invitations, and rest is history.
Not sure what's my 'TSF membership number' but it's pretty small as I joined pretty shortly. I did donate some of my skills/time in making 'geeky stuff' work on the beginning, but otherwise I'm here for the company/stamps. I was never part of the drama (and for some reason have never been involved in any of it), thus for me TSF is 'yet another stamp forum' that I like to read every now and then.

Hopefully the Forum's founding member ( Admin aka irishjack ) will share his reasoning for starting TSF back on July 19, 2013. I think firstfrog2013 , @falshung and reena summed it up nicely in that his aim was to create a welcoming, inclusive venue in which all could participate, regardless of their respective levels of expertise, without fear of ridicule or denigration. Regardless of the driving force behind TSF's creation, I'm glad that it happened and am proud to be part of its membership.

As the focal point of "the drama" on another stamp forum, I came to the realization that the time I have left is too important for me to waste it tilting at windmills (especially when the "windmills" are controlled by folk more interested in self aggrandizement and ego trips than stamp collecting and friendship). I looked at several sites before settling on The Stamp Forum, and after a short while, realized that this is exactly what I sought. The folk here are nonjudgmental, ethical, knowledgeable, and above all friendly. I am very happy at TSF.

I will post latter about how TSF was started
In a nutshell I was a little ticked off and was told by a forum admin if you don't like it start your own forum.
One Friday night I open a proboard accout and it was just me as the only member. I wanted a members run forum the rest is history

What they said! I was also lucky to receive one of those early invitations, and though I still frequent 'that other forum' and several others, this one is home. Thanks Jack (and all you other admins).

Just catching up from my "dead zone" period over the past few weeks, and I really like this thread. Thanks for asking the question, Mark!
And thanks to Jack for starting TSF, and all the other Moderators, Site Supporters, and Major Contributors. While I have been a collector for about 50 years now, it is clear from what I have seen on TSF that I have never really "plumbed the depths" of any one philatelic subject. So, now TSF has got me thinking that perhaps I should....
I also particularly liked Nelson's comments about not finding a great situation in local stamp clubs, either. I have had some similar experiences--nothing nasty or unkind, but some just stuck in a rut. The cool thing about TSF is that there always seems to be something new to find, if you are willing to spend a little time looking for it.
My sincere thanks to all of you who make TSF what it is. It has sure meant a lot to me these past few months!

Although I specialize in one country, I like all aspects of collecting these printed bits of paper. The people here are nice, informative, and non-judgmental. I especially like the idea that it is here to promote collecting, not drive people away. This is important to me. When I go to a stamp show/bourse the last thing I want to here is "Why do you collect that? its not blah blah blah". Instead I would like to hear ahh interesting have you talked to so and so about this he/she may have something for you. That's exactly what I get here. Browsing through some of the threads I see posts and say to myself "That stuff is really cool". The format and design is well thought out making navigation a breeze. Thanks to all who make this forum work!
Cheers!

Thanks for the positive comments.
The plan was to have a place where all are welcome, if you only collect cto or ripped stamps you will have a home here.
Great gang of collectors here, all with different areas and everyone gets along.
We might come across a little friendly in the eyes of a new member or guest but that's the culture of TSF, just jump in and join the fun and games.

Great to read this thread. I just want to say that I am really enjoying myself here. After I restarted my hobby, I did join a lot of online forums and groups. This forum is one of the two that I have managed to stick to. I really enjoy the mix of experience and new collectors discussion. Whatever it is, keep at it fellows, it feels good to keep returning here.
