Hello, my name is Mike and I've been a collector for over 50 years. My user name is coastalcollector and I'm a member of the APS, US Philatelic Classic Society and just joined the Machine Cancel Society
My collecting specialty is US postal stationery, Scott #U58 and U59 (1864-1870 use full entires with fancy cancels, service markings, illustrated advertising and western Mississippi River packet boat markings).
I also have just started collecting US Machine Cancel covers from 1880-1920.
Over the years, I've had other specialty stamp collections that I've then sold. Currently I have several large albums and accumulations of stamps that I sell once in a while but no longer purchase.
I do purchase new US stamps (two panes/booklets at a time) use one for postage and slip the other into my sheet album and enjoy flipping through this once in a while but I don't really study them.
I'm a retired Civil Engineer. My career was to consult, design and supervise the construction of major airport facilities (runways, taxiways, etc.) all over the US and the world for 35 years. I've now retired to the coast of beautiful central Oregon.
I look forward to participating in this forum.
Thanks for reading this

Welcome to TSF, Mike, and thanks for your informative intro post! I am relatively new to the Forum myself, but I have found it a great place to meet new collectors, tap into some incredible resources, and share knowledge and info about collecting. It is a great place. I look forward to seeing posts with photos of material from your collection. Postal stationery is not one of my areas of specialty or expertise, so it will be a good learning opportunity for me. We have another new member named Edith ( Lila Schatten) who is just starting out in postal stationery herself, and she has been looking for help with identification of some of her early U.S. material. Anyway, welcome to TSF, Mike, and enjoy! My wife and I also love Oregon and make frequent vacation visits there.

Hi Mike,
I just stepped inside for a short break from yard work and saw that you had posted your introduction. I'm glad that you have opted to join us and thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. Please feel free to tell us more about your collecting specialty in the appropriate sections of the forum and consider writing about it for our newsletter. If you have any questions about the forum workings and can't find the answer through the search function, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Mike. Good to see another Oregonian here. I'm in Portland at the moment, but aim on relocating to the coast (probably Astoria) in a few years.

Thanks all, I would be happy to answer any questions on US postal stationery and any other subject that I may have knowledge about. As I mentioned in my intro I've collected lots of things over many years.
Although I don't actively collect these, I also have a large accumulation of German private postage stamps from the 1880's-1890's including authentic issues and forgeries. These including full sheets, part sheets and singles.

Hello Mike- Greetings from a fellow Oregonian, although it appears we collect from separate parts of the stamp spectrum. I am a generalist in every general sense, with WW 1840-1940 the focus. I am a member of the Greater Eugene Stamp Society, and we also have a coastal cabin south of Waldport. Jim Jackson aka jkjblue

Hi Jim, Thanks for the welcome..Go Ducks! Not much philatelic activity on the coast. I'd like to talk to you about that sometime. I live a little north of Waldport, closer to Seal Rock (actually Driftwood Beach).
I'm sure there are other collectors in the area and would like to get something organized like a branch of GESS or something like that. A 2-hour drive to Eugene at night is a bit difficult for me but I miss the social interaction, learning, sharing of a stamp club. I've lived in big urban areas my whole life and am just getting use to the "isolation" of living on the coast.

I've lived in big urban areas my whole life and am just getting use to the "isolation" of living on the coast. I can tell you that there is a very good, active stamp club in the Medford-Ashland, Oregon area called the Southern Oregon Philatelic Society (SOPS). My wife and I have been frequent visitors to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) over the years, so I joined the SOPS. I have been able to attend a couple of their events when we have been visiting the area. I checked, and I can see that Medford is more than a 4-hour drive from Waldport, so not very close to where you are, Mike. Well, if your travels ever take you to southern Oregon, let me know. I would be happy to put you in touch with some of the members of SOPS. My wife and I have been thinking about retiring to southern Oregon in the next few years. We shall see!

Mike, The APS website shows 8 different stamp clubs in Oregon (must be something in the water): Redmond, Coos Bay, Eugene, Portland, Grants Pass, Salem, Medford and Roseburg. Perhaps you need to combine stamp club meetings in Salem and/or Eugene with a monthly overnight getaway for you and your wife.

I'm a former Portland resident (a long, long time ago, though) - can't say I remember Waldport but I've been to both Newport and Coos Bay, so I suppose I've been through Waldport at least once. The last time I stayed in Medford I arrived in town and the sign on a bank said 118° F - I found out on the news that night that it had "only" reached 113°. YEESH - that's way too hot for a Canadian.
