It is not just the stamp business but retail in general. It read like he did not realize it had already gone online. If a retail shop does not have an online selling component, they are challenged.

Made a brief stop at this shop in Perth, Australia, today. Didn't buy anything, yet - quite overwhelming as a first visit to a shop like this. I'll be going back, perhaps looking to get some starters for an Australian collection.

I was back in Ottawa over the Remembrance Day time. I stopped in again at Chris Green Stamps, where I spent a leisurely 3-4 hours perusing a few of his stamps. I also chatted quite a bit with the store manager, David. Quite a nice chap he is. I bought a second Lighthouse Canada binder. It is a tad pricey for a binder, but it LOOKS fantastic! Same with the American binder I also have. I purchase 1 Russian stamp (only 1 from a set of 3) commemorating Vitus Bering; 1 French stamp; 2 Chinese, 4 Faroe Islands, 2 Greenland; 2 or 3 American joint issues, and a whack of Canadian. All those Canadian will fill most of the holes in my collection. Well, at least to 1984. I suppose I will continue on to 1999 or 2000. Chris Green does mail order, which is great since I don't plan to go back until September for the next Canada Army Run. Here's a shot of my view of the ceremonies. I should have been on the street to my right to view the parade of military vehicles & soldiers after the ceremonies. They say 32,000 were in attendance. The Prime Minister & Governor General & dignitaries entered the compound just to the left of the photo. Too many vehicles meant one had to be very quick to get a shot. I was too cold to be bothered, and in 2 years in the Arctic I had never felt so cold as I did this Remembrance Day! Great time was had at the store. Always great to GO to a store & just peruse to your hearts content! I'll have to do mail order with them for sure!

BTW, Jim Forte is one of the leading postal history dealers in the US. Thanks for your comment, Jeff. I have quoted your post and then moved it to this thread about stamp dealers and their shops, so as not to stray too far away from the PSNCo stamps in that thread. I would like to express thanks also to michael, who pointed out the PSNCo forgery on Jim Forte's website, and also to anglobob who PMed me with some comments. Perhaps none of you remembers it, but I did write about visiting Jim Forte's stamp shop in Las Vegas for a TSF Newsletter once upon a time. I met Jim a couple of times during those visits, but as I was buying stamps rather than postal history, I mainly dealt with Jim's employee, a man named Alan. Based on what I saw during those visits, it is fair to say that Jim delegates the stamp ID work and pricing to Alan, and he runs it as a sideline business to his real interest, which is in the postal history. As a result, I found that I was able to get some pretty good deals on some nice stamps, because those were of lesser interest to Jim, the owner. Just my two cents on the subject. Other comments are welcome, of course....

I suppose I could also add to my previous post by saying that buying stamps that are not the primary interest of a particular dealer is a strategy I have used on several occasions with pretty good success. One tends to get better prices and find a less-detail-oriented approach on those sorts of items, meaning that good finds can be made.
A case in point: Whenever I go to the WESTPEX show in California, I always look for a certain dealer who specialized in stamps of Asia. But I don't buy Asia from him, I buy his country mini-collections that are not from Asia. These are the leftovers from WW collections, after he has separated out all the Asia material. He just wants to get rid of that material, so he offers it at a significant discount from catalogue, and I have found that there have been overlooked surprises lurking in those lots.
In one particular instance, I found some Lombardy-Venetia issues tucked into a lot of classic Austria, but never identified for what they were, either by the original collector or the dealer. The stamps were hinged into the spaces along with the regular issues from Austria, which have a similar design. It is mainly the currency and colors that are different, I think. Anyway, the 3-4 Lombardy stamps easily had higher CV than all the rest of the Austria put together.
This is probably not an original idea, but it is one that has occurred to me over the years, and I have sometimes used it to good benefit.

On the other side of the world... This is one of the few shops left in Hong Kong, but you can see, they literally sell everything - wine, coins, notes... and stamps. Actually, there are a couple more that I know of that are still around (like Yang's), but a lot of them have also set up online shops through local buy/sell websites - similar to ebay but for local buyers. I used to pass by this shop all the time, since it's on the ground floor and on a busy street/intersection near where I used to work (but I didn't collect stamps back then and always had the intention to go in and ask about selling the collection I had at home, but never did). I plan to go in one of these days, not to sell, but perhaps to see what I can find... And also hit up some of the other shops in town too. More photos to come...

First off, thanks to Vanessa ( rainbowhugz ) for reviving this dormant thread and letting us see a stamp shop in Hong Kong. I went to HK a few times back in the 1980s, but I am sorry to say that I never looked for any stamp shops back then--I wish I had! I think my only stamp-related activity then was going to the Post Office to buy stamps that were current at that time. Anyway, thanks for the post, and I hope you will show us more.... Phill-lately and Stamps Stratford-upon-Avon, England, UKI mentioned in the Whatcha thread that I would be making a post in this thread after my weekend visit to Stratford, and here it is. This was my third visit to Phill's store, and as usual, I had a great experience and came away with some very nice stamps at very fair prices. Acquisitions this time were from British East Africa, Cape of Good Hope, Denmark, and Hong Kong. I will make posts of the stamps in country threads once I get them scanned. Left: A bit unusually, Phill's shop is located behind a large garden center, a few miles outside of Stratford-upon-Avon. Right: To get there, you have to walk through the main building of the garden center, exit out the back, and then there is a large courtyard enclosed by smaller buildings, which are individual shops. Phill's shop is indicated by the red arrow. Left: The entrance to Phill's shop. Poor camera angle on my part allowed an overhead beam to obscure the shop's sign. Phill has added a replica plastic red pillar box, which he displays just outside the door when the shop is open. Middle: A close-up of the pillar box. Right: Inside the shop, where I sat opposite Phill at his desk and looked through the material. Most of my visit I was there by myself, so I had Phill's full attention virtually the whole time. This was lucky, as during my previous visits, Phill had several other customers at the same time as I was there. Anyway, it was a very nice visit, and I hope to get back there at least once more before we leave the UK later this year.

Following on my last post, I visited another shop today, but they were just about to close when I arrived. I only managed to browse on the outside, so will have to come back (earlier) again next time! Beryllium Guy that old post box outside the shop you went to in Stratford-upon-Avon (yeay Shakespeare!) reminds me of the ones we used to have in Hong Kong. Now I want to go to the General Post Office and check out their little display and see if they have old post boxes on display (for the other thread about post boxes!)

The only stamps I purchased while in HK was at the GPO. The clerk at the counter was very helpful, pointing out all the stamps he had on hand. I bought a few complete sets, c/w gutter pairs and some postage dues. Being on a working stop-over, I didn't search out any stamps shops unfortunately.
I'd love to go back when HK gains its independence!

Corbitts Ltd. - Stamp Dealers & Auctioneers Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, UKLuckily, I mentioned in the Whatcha thread about my planned visit to Newcastle, and Alex ( vikingeck) responded to remind me about Corbitts. I had forgotten about them even though Alex had introduced me to them in February at the London 2022 Show, but thanks to his prompt, I was able to pay them a short visit late on Wednesday afternoon. The timing was also lucky for me, as I learned while there that they would be closed for the next 4 days for the bank holidays to celebrate QEII's Platinum Jubilee. I came away with some nice acquisitions from Cape of Good Hope, Hong Kong, Kenya & Uganda, and East Africa & Uganda. Once I return home, I will get those scanned and post in the appropriate threads. It was a brief, but excellent visit, and I really enjoyed talking stamps with the guys! Left: Yours truly looking at the Corbitts signs from street level. Right: Inside the 2nd-floor shop with David and Richard behind the counter. There were stamps everywhere!

In fact, I still own the three catalogues I purchased at my visit in 1994. I was there with my wife on our 1 year anniversary. We were living in Korea at the time and my wife also wanted to visit a Korean colleague and friend that she had worked with for many years who had moved to Hong Kong and was working for Samsung investments. The catalogues are a bit dated at this point but every once in a while I still reference them because they contain information not included in Scott.

I did not have much time for stamps during my trip to Korea. I don't necessarily regret that as we were a family of 5 this time and we were busy seeing touristy things, shopping and doing a lot of eating. I was able to make it to what I think is one of the few, if not the only, remaining brick and mortar stamp stores in Busan, International Stamp & Coin Center, in the underground shopping mall in the central downtown area of Busan. The proprietor is someone I know, also, from my days living in Busan and attending the Busan Philatelic Society's meetings. More about that is posted here.I stopped in briefly, only to pick up the newest Korean stamp catalogue but nothing more....we just didn't have time.

Hey everyone, this is super interesting, do keep posting your various visits so we can build a great list of Places To See as we travel (you know, so later we can report back and say, "Well, I missed the Vatican while I was in Rome, but at least I made it to Giampaolo's Stamp Shoppe, 200 square feet of nothing but Italy #32s!" PS. Eh... NO, there isn't ACTUALLY a stamp shop called Giampaolo's Stamp Shoppe in Rome!

I have seen a few old ones being sold on our local buy/sell website and at second hand book shops but I believe they have stopped publishing them. The last issue was 2018 as far as I'm aware (25th edition). And they don't publish China anymore either...

I'm back in France today after spending most of the week in Vienna, where I was attending an IAEA function. I of course went to the UNPA Vienna post office, which is actually a rather small thing tucked away in the corner of one of the souvenir shops: Unfortunately, there never was any staff there (I went there three times), even during the posted office hours, so I couldn't do any business there. The TSF members that asked for postcards from the UN Vienna Office will have to make do with the one stamp on offer at the more standard gift shop. The displays at the UNPA stand were nice (though, of course, nothing I hadn't seen before) and it seemed the main means of doing business was by filling in a mail order form and putting it in a box for this purpose. Rather disappointing. I get these forms already at home as per my subscription. I did have a few free hours on my last day and headed downtown to the Westermayr stamp shop, where I bought myself a good chunk of modern Austrian stamps missing in my thematic collections, as well as a new stockbook to put them in. That will keep me busy during the next few days. They were a little more expensive than I had expected, but the stock was impressive. It's in a converted apartment and the two ladies working there seemed to know their business. I'll definitely have to go back. A picture of the entrance hallway at the street level:

I've now visited this collectibles mall (in Mong Kok, for those that know Hong Kong) twice - going back again later this month as the shop is going to find a better copy of one of the stamp sheets I'm after. Great service! The first time I went in, it was basically more to explore because I found this video (watch if you're interested to see what it looks like inside - quite overwhelming!) There were a lot more numismatic shops and a few curios shops but as in the video, quite a few of the shops were closed. Though it was still nice to do some window shopping. I assume the owners may have moved to online sales and only open up if they have people going to pick things up or if they make an appointment in advance as the same shops were closed both times I went. I also managed to sell some of my dad's old banknotes which he recently gave to me when I was sorting out his stamps, and since I'm not even going to attempt collecting currency, I brought them with me the second time I went and now I've got double my monthly budget to spend on stamps this month!! I think that's a win, right?! I found 1 really good shop that sells stamps on the first level (there are 4 levels!) and the prices of the items are as competitive as the local online sellers, so I figure, I might as well make the most of going there and buy a few more items from my wish list when I go next! I'm unsure how so many of these shops remain open as most of the shops are devoid of customers, but they must be able to somehow... Happy Collecting, Friends!! xx

Thanks for your posts, rainbowhugz - they are very interesting! It's a pleasant change from the news from Hong Kong that we usually see.
I was in HK way back in 1981. I only managed to find the GPO, where the clerk happily showed me what he had in stock. I bought it all and wish he had more! A lot has changed since then! I wish we had a fraction of what that video shows over here! So much available, even including $1 & $2 Canadian banknotes!

Hello all, Back from Belgium after two weeks. Lots of stamps waiting for me at home, so there will be a few posts about them as well. But, as promised, I made a side trip to Brussels (I was staying in Leuven) to visit a stamp shop there. According to my internet search, there are three stamp shops still active in Brussels, all on the same street, the "Rue du Midi" in the old part of town. An easy walk from the Brussels-Central Train Station and a stone's throw from the Manneken Pis, so almost impossible to miss during any tourist visit. Of the three stores listed, one was closed on Saturdays, and another turned out to be little more than a PO Box, having moved all its business online. But there was one left, called DeLonghe, with an inviting storefront: I filled up on Belgian Congo stamps from the semi-classical period before independence and immediately after. Prices were near CV rates, so not very cheap, and selection was not quite as wide as I would have liked (they seem to specialize in more modern Belgian material) but there was still plenty enough to fill in quite a few holes in my holdings and make the trip worthwhile. Look out for upcoming posts! My next business trip will be to Knoxville, TN, in three weeks time. But no stamp shops there anymore, it seems. Although, if there are any TSF members in the neighbourhood, maybe a meeting is possible?

Today I received some sad, but not unexpected news. My go-to stamp dealer in Germany has closed shop, after about a century of operation. Their mailings (both paper and electronic) had gotten fewer and further between since the pandemic, and their website had been unreachable for a couple of months now. My monthly order in March had only a few items in, heavily discounted. And today they sent me back the form from the last order I placed with a note that they were no longer in operation, and a last parting gift for the good customer that I have been to them for the last 20-odd years. I'm really sad to see that story end.

Many thanks for your post, Xavier ( hrdoktorx). I gave it a "like" but that was to acknowledge its impact, not because I am happy about what you have had to report. It is a sad day, indeed, when another stamp shop has to close its doors. It sounds like you had a good run with this dealer in Germany, and I am glad for you and for him. I have had similar experiences, but of course, those are becoming less frequent with the passage of time. Brick-and-mortar shops are simply too costly to maintain when dealers can do almost everything online nowadays. I understand and accept the practicalities of that, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. I started this thread back when, because I knew then as I still know now, that the days of the traditional stamp shops are numbered. That's why I value each and every one of those places while they are still around, and I patronize them whenever I can. I want to contribute to their survival for as long as I can, even though they are, as the saying goes, "a dying breed." I am glad that you had a good 20+ years with your dealer!

I spent last week in Finland, attending an IAEA Nuclear Data Meeting hosted by the University of Helsinki. The cooler weather was a welcome change to the heat wave currently hitting Southern France, though waking up with the sunrise (as I am bound to do) at 4:30am was hard. Since this was my first time in the country, I made sure to hit a local stamp shop during a free afternoon. A local collector friend of mine had recommended a couple, including Merkki-Albert which was down the street from my hotel and a short tram ride from the central train station. I usually take a picture of the storefront, but the building was undergoing renovations, with scaffolding hiding the store sign and a construction truck most inconveniently parked in front of it all week long. Inside, it was a narrow long room with stockbooks and albums in shelves along one side and a long counter, and the rest of the room was a shamble of cardboard boxes. But the storekeeper was very nice (however with only limited English skills, but still much better than my Finnish) and helped me find a large part of my wish list which I had sent to him in advance. At the same time in the store were two other customers, someone from Toronto and another from England (who used to be a regular but moved back to England and was visiting), both of which seemed very happy finding what they had come to look for. In the end, I spent a little more than I expected, but nothing too excessive. I will be showing some of my acquisitions in the next posts, but to put the visit in context, here are the first two, for the University of Finland (we were not in that building but one nearby) and another stamp from when IAEA Nuclear Data meetings were a bigger deal than they are now.

I had a nice surprise in the mail yesterday. You will recall, as mentioned earlier in this thread, that my go-to stamp dealer in Germany closed its doors a few months ago. It turns out that another dealer (with whom I have briefly interacted in the past) got a hold of their subscriptions lists, and it is resuming deliveries in place of the old shop. So I got a pair of beauties on approval (which I am approving of), and which will be posted in the corresponding threads shortly. Now that means I have to scour through their web site and build myself another one of my mammoth Excel spreadsheet wish lists... Not the worse summer project to take on. I'll of course keep you posted on how the relationship evolves.

I am in Prague this week and next on business. So of course I used the week-end for an exploration of a local stamp shop. Local colleagues, though not philatelists themselves, recommended Alfafila, downtown. It's tucked away inside a commercial passage, so not easy to find if you don't know where to look, and I also did not see any signs on the main streets leading to it. The shop itself is quite small. When I came in, there were three gentlemen already in discussion around a table, plus the shopkeeper, and that was enough to completely fill the place. Not speaking Czech, I tried my luck with a greeting in English, which elicited a response in German, which suited me fine. The place specializes in old postcards and covers, and any serious collector of postmarks and old postal stationary would find much to interest him/her. But the stamps selection per se was rather limited. I had hoped to find some of the Upper Silesia issues that I am still missing, but no luck there. I did eventually buy a set of German overprints from the World War I era (some of which I suspect I have already, so they may appear in a future give-away), so that the trip wouldn't be for naught. Also, to complete my previous post in this thread, after scouring the new German dealer's website for items of interest to me, it turns out they tend to specialize in material well above my price range (or stuff I have already), so the wish list I could draw up contained only a little more than a half-dozen items. I did place an order on their website, which was acknowledged, but am still waiting on it six weeks later... I'm losing hope that the order will ever be filled.
