The East Africa Force was rapidly expanded following the Italian declaration of war in June 1940. Colonial units were increased in size and scope and East African troops were reinforced by contingents from West Africa (Nigeria, The Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia) and the Union of South Africa. By November 1940, an impressive field force had been organised and deployed. East Africa Command, an expansion of the East Africa Force, was a Command of the British Army. Until 1947 it was under the direct control of the Army Council and thereafter it became the responsibility of Middle East Command.
