Because the majority of our membership is focused on collecting countries other than the U.S., I've been spending quite a bit of time reading their posts and then pulling out my Scott Internationals to see if I had anything worthy of contributing. While thumbing through the Monaco pages, I came across this beauty (May 15, 1947, Scott C20, 203, C19), which I believe Londonbus1 would have me correctly refer to as a triptych. (see Linn's Refresher for a Se-tenants for Dummies-type primer). That got me wondering and has prompted me to pose the question: What country was the first to issue se-tenant stamps and in what year did that take place?

I think you'll be hard pressed to beat the German colonial Hohenzollern 5pf and 10pf pairs. Hope I'm not missing something obvious.
As for which of the colonies was first, that would take some flipping through Michel to figure out...
Can anyone get back into the 19th century?

By the way, I wasn't counting missing or inverted overprints or errors. I don't disagree that they might be se-tenant, but not intentionally so.
The Natal 'Not For Use' overprint on the Edward VII panes might give the Hohenzollern a run for her money, if it counts... one stamp, and one former stamp, now intentionally overprinted into labeldom.

I imagine that a strict intrepretation of the se-tenant definition would have the overprints count but my sense is that different, adjacent designs should be the major determinant (but if I really knew what I was talking about I probably wouldn't have posed the question).
I also don't think that souvenir sheets depicting a compilation of previously issued stamps, such as the United State's Third International Philatelic Exhibition issue souvenir sheet (May 9, 1936, Scott 1778) should be considered.
If that is the case, I believe that the first U.S. se-tenant issue would be the November 9, 1964 Christmas issue (Scott 1254-1257).
For my own edification, what year were the German colonial Hohenzollern 5pf and 10pf pairs released?

That got me wondering and has prompted me to pose the question: What country was the first to issue se-tenant stamps and in what year did that take place?I don't know the answer to that question, and rather than research it I thought I would throw an idea into the air. The earliest one I can think of in my collection has its genesis in a booklet and perhaps that will be the ultimate source for the first se-tenant pair. The earliest one that comes to mind is the Germania issue, the German definitive in use before, during & after WWI. Let's take a quick look at my Michel specialized .... the earliest Germania booklet with proper se-tenant stamps was issued in 1913 (April 2, to be exact). There were many earlier booklets with advertising "stamps" se-tenant with postal issues, but this is the first one I see with a pair of postal issues of different value. Here's an image, nicked from eBay. CJD's example of the German colonies showing the Kaiser's yacht are from right around the same time. The first se-tenant for German East Africa was issued "mid-1913", same for German Southwest Africa, same for Cameroon. I call it a tie! ha ha Ryan
