I got interested in metered mail (or is it meter mail?) after winning this auction lot. I started putting aside the covers that I received in the mail, with a vague idea that I could perhaps build up a zip code collection of meters. However, upon scanning this today, I realized that the design itself is actually very cool looking:
And I thought that I may as well start a thread to celebrate the humble meter. This example sent 10 June 2016.

I've never been a fan of meter(ed) mail - stamp collectors use stamps, right? - however, as a philatelist meter(ed) mail is certainly fair game for collecting and there's certainly no shortage of available material. Even today these arrive in my mailbox - and likely yours too - in far greater numbers than stamped mail. That said I do have a number of metered mail covers in my "US Non-Denominated Postage" topical collection. All in all though the linked page does have some pretty neat looking meter markings.

Not a huge fan of meters either, but find some interesting. Found this collection of prepaid non profit meters in a box of stuff. Thought them worth hanging onto. Bottom example similar to yours. I really like the ink jet eagle directly above it.

Got my meters and imprint, (edited to add "and imprint" thanks Smaugie!) accumulation sorted. Here are some scans... Mick, let me know if you'd like these as afreebie. I have duplicates of a few of these if anyone else is interested.

I actively collect meters (I have thousands of them). Technically an imprint is only a meter if it has a meter number, though meter numbers are less obvious on the more modern meters. They also indicate a place of issue (often just a zip code these days). Meters may not always have a date.
A similar area of study would be permits or permit mail. Early types of permit mail were dated just like meters were but did not have meter numbers. These days most permits are rather simple squares such as those pictured above. Some companies and organizations, though, can get fancy, like the Statue of Liberty permits posted by oldtriguy.
The earliest meter issued in the US was not discovered/recognized until 1996 with only one example known!
Keep your eyes open.
I regularly refer to the online catalog that Steve linked to earlier in this thread.
Meter slogans can be fun to collect as well. Here is a cover with a US military slogan, in this case, Strategic Air Command, U.S. Air Force.

Dave, I am definitely interested in these - thank you very much for the generous offer. But I don't want to bogart them if others are interested too - e.g. maybe smauggie would also like a shot at them?

I finally got around to emptying a box of materials taken from my office when I retired some 4 years ago and came across this meter. It is from a Hasler "Mailmaster" meter. It has a right-facing eagle at left of the frank, "U.S. POSTAGE" is at the top, and the meter number with "H METER" prefix at the bottom. The frank, not including town mark is 35 mm wide and the town mark diameter is 25 mm. The value figure is "02.67:" and the town mark is FORT BELVOIR / OCT 21'02 / VA.

This recent arrival was from a mailing by the Smithsonian Institution. The International Postage Meter Stamp Catalog on Wikibooks categorizes it as OO-E5, a Pitney Bowes "DM" series (digital) that first appeared in 2002). This Official Mail/Penalty meter stamp corresponds to type M9, examples of which appear in images posted by both James and Dave.

A Data-Pac digital stamp with a flag ornament on a nonprofit mailing (categorized as "S1a"); Data-Pac meters first appeared in late-2006. (Edit Mar 23, 2019: this meter is categorized as QD1a in the revised catalog.)

This presorted first class meter with was produced by a Pitney Bowes DM Infinity (digital) machine and is categorized as type M11B. The characteristics of type "B" are: Oblong 2D "IBI Lite" barcode; 2nd line from bottom a right-justified 6-digit number; and Bottom line: "21 " plus 7-digit number. This meter can be differentiated from type M10B by its inclusion of "PITNEY BOWES" underneath the eagle. EDIT 12/11/2017: The revised categorization of this meter is QB3.2.

Mick opened this thread with a First Class M13a Pitney Bowes meter from the Connect + (digital; 2010) machine. Here is a Presorted First Class from the M13s (the "M" is inverted in the second line beneath the eagle). Per the note in the International Postage Meter Stamp Catalog/USA, the Connect+ system can print a path completely across the top of an envelope including the return address, slogan, and whatever, as well as the frank, and in multiple colors. EDIT 9Dec17: This stamp is identified as QB5.1A in the revised online catalog.

This presorted first class meter is type M11A, Pitney Bowes "DM Infinity" (digital). Unlike the M11B shown above, this meter has a large, square 2D "Datamatrix" barcode. The 2nd line from bottom reads "02 1T",(or 1A or 1M) and the bottom line has a 7-digit number.

Here is a presorted standard M11B imprint made by the Pitney Bowes DM Infinity (digital) meter -- note the lack of a date.

Here is a presorted first class imprint from the Hasler WJ PRO (digital), 2006 categorized as R6A. It is characterized by a small frameless frank with “US POSTAGE” at top right above the value figures and date; a small oblong 2D "IBI Lite" barcode at lower left; the class of mail above the 2D barcode; and, the meter company identification at top left above the identification number and ZIP code (Hasler is 018). All examples are printed in blue. EDIT: In the updated catalog this Hasler meter type is categorized as QA6.1. Here are a few more of this type:

R7A Hasler "IS330/ 350/ 420/ 440/ 460/ 480" (digital), 2008. This is a frameless frank with meter company identification at top left above the date and "US POSTAGE" in negative letters. There is a small oblong 2D "IBI Lite" barcode at lower left, the value figures are at right above ZIP code, and the identification number with meter company identification prefix (Hasler - 011D or Neopost - 041L) at the bottom. Imprints may be with or without the class of mail at top right.

This Neopost meter is similar to the R7 Hasler [and Neopost] shown in the previous post but it has not been listed in the International Postage Meter Catalog. The shared similarities are: a frameless frank with meter company identification at top left above the date and "US POSTAGE" in negative letters; a small oblong 2D "IBI Lite" barcode at lower left; the value figures at right above ZIP code; and the identification number with meter company identification prefix at the bottom. The differences are: the company name is in all capital letters vice lower case with company trademark and the meter company identification prefix is 041M vice 041L. Perhaps this meter will be designated R8 when the catalog is updated (only speculation on my part).

Question on the value shown on these - does the small subscript form part of the price? (So, for example, Steve's Hasler of 02/02 above would have a price of $0.373 \ 37.3 cents.)
|
|
|
Post by smauggie on Mar 22, 2017 14:41:54 GMT
The answer is yes, Mick. It is very much a part of the price. When the mailing consists of ten thousand envelopes, a tenth of a cent can make a real difference.

It is always nice when something interesting arrives in the daily mail. The below is categorized in the International Postage Meter Stamp Catalog as PC-E1.3Ac: Envelope Manager Software (Endicia Inc.) “DAZzle 2000” (digital), 2002. The "A" in the designation indicates it is the basic stamp without frame and the "c" indicates "Commercial Base Pricing" or "Commercial Base Price" has been added below the rate statement.
