Hi Everyone! I'm a newbie to stamp collecting but can already tell how addicting it can be! I'm a late starter (40's) but am already loving it. It started for me with an auction that I attended. I bid on and won a very old wooden trunk and it's contents, which were a bunch of postcards, a few buttons, and some old Chevy advertisements. I almost tossed them because I really had no interest in postcards and was just thrilled that I had won the trunk. Walking to the trash with them, I flipped one over and started reading some of what was written, and that's when it happened! I glanced over at the stamp and was immediately in love with the color, (it was reddish in color and had George Washinton on it) and then I looked at the postmark, which was 1910 and I was hooked! I love old things with a story and immediately started reading the others and looking at their stamps. There were several different Franklins, the Washington and stamps from Japan, Canada, France, other places.......My much wanted trunk had now taken a backseat to the postcards that were almost tossed and I couldn't wait to get home to research them and find out all I could......and now here I am!! I look forward to reading all the posts and learning more about stamp collecting (my new love). π

Welcome to TSF, jewls885, it's great to have you with us! Thanks for the nice introductory post--I love your story of how you have started collecting. I could well imagine it, as I still search at garage and yard sales for stamp-related items. I hope that you will favor us with some photos of your favorite finds. Again, welcome, and enjoy your time with us. Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

Welcome to our Forum!
One of the things I enjoy when processing cards or covers that I've acquired is trying to learn something about the sender and/or recipient through the magic of internet search engines like Google.

Thanks, guys, for the warm welcome, it's much appreciated!! I look forward to sharing my "finds" with you (as soon as I figure out how to upload, haha) and I look forward to hearing opinions and input from you. I've already been scoping out my next auctions for my next "hunt". I'm embarrassed to say that also at the auction, which started all of this for me, were two very thick and very full photo albums of postcards that I didn't even look at (I really wanted that trunk!!) and had zero interest in (never even thought about stamps). Now that I'm hooked, I haven't gone a day without daydreaming about what kinds of stamps and correspondence may have been in those albums (love a good story) and what I just walked on past and also what I so unwittingly may have passed on without a second thought, not knowing any better. Both albums went for $5 each!! Oh well, I know now, and I'm hooked, and will never look at a postcard or old stamped envelope the same again and I love the idea of that!!! π

Welcome to the forum, jewls! First, a little advice. Collect the postcards as a whole, do not remove the stamp! Vintage, used cards from the early 20th century tell a story, and each piece of the card contributes. Second, as you really sound excited about this hobby, and as I just love encouraging new collectors (ask anyone on the forum), I would be delighted to send you some stamps, from the USA and worldwide - just send me a private message with your mailing address and I'll pop a bunch in the mail (if you have a special area or time period you are interested in, note that in the message). Enjoy your new hobby!

As Bobby requested, please let me know your particular areas or periods of interest, and I will send what I can. Welcome & Best Regards, Chris

Thank you, bobby1948 and Beryllium Guy!! I would love some stamps and very much appreciate the kind gesture π Still learning how to navigate here, so please bear with me, lol, as I'm a bit new to "forums" as well, so not sure yet how to reply back to individual posts, only how to reply to the thread.... Thanks, bobby1948, I had wondered about removing the stamps but what you said makes total sense, thanks for reading my mind and answering my first question!! Haha! I'm still trying to figure out how to upload images to show what came inside the trunk from the auction. It seems there are so many variations and I'm a bit overwhelmed at figuring out what exactly it is that I have. The only thing I know for sure is that the earliest postmarks start at 1906 and up with the Franklins, there being three completely different ones of him. One Washington 2 cent, with "two cent" spelt out, and one, 1 cent John Smith. I have several others, many being foreign, but the Washington, Franklins and John Smith for some reason are nagging at me and have my curiosity peaked! It's so exciting and exhausting to me at the same time!! Haha! I'm so glad this was the board that I started with because you guys have made me feel at home, lol, even though I've yet to figure out how to navigate through the house!! Lol, no worries, I'm a smart cookie and will figure it out as soon as I get enough free time between work to stay on for a while!! Thanks again everyone!!!π

Still learning how to navigate here, so please bear with me, lol, as I'm a bit new to "forums" as well, so not sure yet how to reply back to individual posts, only how to reply to the thread.... At the bottom of the thread there is a window that allows you to "Quick Reply" and, over to the right, there is a "Reply" button. "Quick Reply" just allows you to type straight text, whereas "Reply" allows you to add images, include links, type in colours, add tables, smileys, videos, etc etc etc. As you say, some of that requires some experimentation to figure out but there's nothing impossible in any of it. To reply to specific posts and to include a quote from that post, just hit the "Quote" button found over to the right on every post (in this case, I edited your quote to remove all but the relevant sentence to which I'm replying, but that's just my personal method - others prefer to include the entire quote, sometimes editing the quote is tricky and can induce unintended consequences ....). Take a stab at it, we're a tolerant and patient bunch here and mistakes made during the learning phase won't raise anybody's ire. Ryan

Ahhhh, I see where my confusion was coming in! I had been using my phone/mobile version and there doesn't seem to be a "Quick Reply" button at the bottom. After switching to the "desktop version," I'm seeing that it is much different than the mobile version and offers much more with regards to navigating through the site. Thank you Ryan!!! I can now see the "Quick Reply" button!! I'll toy with it a bit and I'm sure I'll be a pro in no time now!! Thanks again!! You guys are just awesome here!! π

Yay me! Lol, I was able to post my pictures and put them under "General Discussion" (I hope that's the right place!!). What a difference the "desktop version" made!! Thanks again, Ryan!!! π

Yay me! Lol, I was able to post my pictures and put them under "General Discussion" (I hope that's the right place!!). If you end up with your post in the "wrong" place, a forum moderator will probably put in into the "right" place. Sometimes these decisions are clear and can be made right away, and sometimes the discussion just kind of drifts that way. For example, if somebody posts something under General Discussion and the thread ends up being a 5 page discussion on the stamps of Angola, the thread will probably eventually get moved into the Angola folder! I love a good auction...of ANY kind. Postcard collecting (deltiology) and stamp collecting (philately) are both very similar and rewarding. Being primarily a postal history hoarder---er, collector--l do enjoy a good postcard show when l can make it. I almost ALWAYS prefer a postcard that actually went through the mail.
Conversely, most true POSTCARD collectors prefer them unused. At true postcard shows I'm the one turning all the boxes BACKWARDS as I'm looking for the used cards first ;-)

At true postcard shows I'm the one turning all the boxes BACKWARDS as I'm looking for the used cards first ;-) I do exactly the same thing. Unfortunately our major postcard fair in London has ceased to be. Perhaps this is partly due to eBay and other online sites. The frustration is that many sellers only show the picture side of used cards.
