I picked up this rather nice 1 oz letter rate label with a postmark that I can't identify. It appears to have been cancelled August 29th 1926, somewhere in Ontario. Can anyone pick out the place name and perhaps flesh out how the label was used given that there is no indicia? Can the type of aircraft shown be identified?Thank you.

The place name appears to be Sioux Lookout, Ontario (retroReveal image follows). Per the note in my 2014 Unitrade, "...several airplane companies issued stamps to prepay mail carried commercially to areas in Canada not accessible by mail or ship. These companies held contracts with and operated under strict regulations and control of the Canadian Postal Authorities. These stamps could only be affixed to the back of covers and usually carried boxed oval cachets giving the dates or points of flight..." The Western Canada Airways Service stamp shown (CL40) was issued May 1, 1927 and valued at 10 cents.

Looks like it is a Fokker Universal. The plane on the stamp apparently crashed while in service to another airline, Independent Airways Ltd.

I am sure this stamp is listed in the Unitrade Canada Specialized Catalog. I will look it up this evening when I get home if nobody else has identified it.
The ownership of the plane was: Western Canada Airways Ltd >Canadian AW (Western Lines) Ltd >HR & Mrs C McConachie >Independant Airways Ltd
The stamp is also featured on this website Explore North - Canada Airpostals
The above website states that: "The design on this stamp could be considered a loose interpretation of that aircraft."

I agree, Sioux Lookout, the Hub of the North.

Thank you both for your assistance. Great name for a post office. I guessed the aircraft image was just a representation as it didn't look at all familiar. Is it usual for service labels like this not to have a denomination, despite providing a stated 1 oz carriage weight?
Edit:
Looking at the Retroreveal image, the year actually appears later (which ties in better with the issue date); it looks more like 1928.

Yes. Especially in the early airmail years, the weight of the letters being air-mailed was important so that they could make sure not to overload the airplanes. I can't recall any specific examples off the top of my head but I think there are a number of other stamps that are denominated in weight rather than currency.

Thanks again for your help and the link. Looking at my copy, it's been printed on distinctly thick paper and still has quite a fair bit of very shiney gum remaining. Oh for an imperf vertical pair.

The Unitrade catalog lists this as # CL40. My guess is you have CL40a (rose colored background issued in 1928). 2011 CV $9.
