A really nice collection, Alex, thanks for posting the photos.
As a matter of interest, where does one acquire post boxes? Do you find them on eBay or buy them from antique dealers or some other way?
Just curious....

[Posted by former member alexcandy.]A really nice collection, Alex, thanks for posting the photos. As a matter of interest, where does one acquire post boxes? Do you find them on eBay or buy them from antique dealers or some other way? Just curious.... My French post boxes came from eBay and were the cheapest. Around €200 each. La Poste is slowly updating their post boxes with more modern versions so they are fairly easy to find. The USPS box came from eBay and wasn't expensive, but shipping from the States was. The seller was an antiques dealer, USPS retired these wall mounted boxes a few years ago. You can still find them at Disneyland. One of my Royal Mail Queen Elizabeth boxes came from a guy who had bought it from the Royal Mail in the 1980's. (It came with a tin of original paint). The other Queen Elizabeth box and the George VI came from a specialist dealer, who strangely are also responsible for the upkeep of post boxes at National Trust properties . My George VI box was by far the most expensive.

I love these post boxes! What a great way to receive personal letters, I am seriously thinking now of getting one and having it replace the letterbox in my door

Perhaps this site may be of interest to some: The Letter Box Study Group. It is rather awkwardly designed and frustrating, as the postbox images themselves are not identified; although these may be elsewhere on the site. Use the index on the left hand side of the screen to navigate. Here is an image of a 'mini post office', located in Frodsham in Cheshire, UK. There were only 50 ever made of these Vermillion Giants, of which only 5 remain. These were a combined telephone kiosk, letter box and stamp dispenser. Note the George V royal cypher on the hooded roof. These are now protected as Grade II listed buildings.

While these boxes are not in my collection per se, I thought that they might make an interesting contribution to this thread. This post box, with its novel paint job, sits just outside the Philatelic Museum in Tokyo, Japan This is a vintage Japanese post box on display inside the Philatelic Museum, but no longer in service.

Thanks for keeping this thread going, Steve. I enjoyed watching the video. For me, as a classic movie fan, it brought to mind the end of Raider's of the Lost Ark, with a scene of an immense warehouse where the U.S. Government keeps all sorts of treasures. I am glad that they could lay their hands on this one and display it in the museum! Your post also reminds me that I had a couple more photos of post boxes to offer on this thread: In contrast to the fancy, striped post box outside the Philatelic Museum in Tokyo, here is what a typical one looks like. This one is outside the Post Office in the Kudanshita neighborhood in central Tokyo, not far from the Royal Palace. During my trip to Europe in late October, I spotted these post boxes in the main train station in Stuttgart, Germany. There is also a vending machine for stamps just to the right of the post boxes.

Spotted this on Facebook yesterday; PTT postbox from Izmir in Turkey. Very elegant but would look better without the upstand and mounted on a stone/brick pillar; in my opinion.

Last week, on a short trip to Las Vegas, I noticed this old-fashioned solid brass letter box in the lobby of the Palace Station Hotel. The hotel does not look that old, so I was a bit surprised to see it there. I remember this sort of mail box from the lobbies of many of the old office buildings in downtown Cleveland when I was a kid. I feel sure that these must be disappearing, too, so I thought I would take a photo and post it here.

I miss the mailboxes. The ones in our town on street corners have been removed. Not sure why, Vandalism maybe? or perhaps email..... There are still two drive-up boxes at the post office, but that requires getting in the car. I would rather walk a block or two.

All right, it seems time to revive this neglected thread, too! Thanks to Xavier ( hrdoktorx) for his post in the Postmark Calendar thread depicting post boxes and tagging me in the process. What Xavier neglected to mention is that the way that he and I realized that we were both stamp collectors is that during a lunch gathering at work, I was showing photos from my Baltic cruise last month, and after every few photos of scenery, there was one of a post box. I informed those to whom I was showing the photos that the reason for all of the images of post boxes was because I was a stamp collector, and at that point, Xavier smiled and said that he was a stamp collector, too. So, I have to thank the fates that I had not yet removed all the photos of post boxes from my phone when I went to show them to those at the lunch gathering, or else I may never have figured out that Xavier is a stamp collector, just like me. It was a great moment! Pictured below are two very different post boxes found in Tallinn, Estonia. The top one is located at the main post office, and so it is clearly a new-looking box, but of a very traditional style and design. The second image is of a more modern style post box found on the streets of Tallinn. Despite the modern design, note the traditional post horn image.

Just for fun, a cover with four different designs of German "Automaten" stamps, featuring some post boxes as well.

A pretty letter box I just found down the corridor on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I am this week. Unfortunately no longer in use.

According to this Mauritius stamp, the island uses the British-style pillar box postbox. Maybe salentin can confirm?

Here is a miniature sheet issued by Royal Mail for Christmas 2018. These are among my favorite secular Christmas stamps.

Great Britain - Oxford, England King Edward VII Era Post BoxI often find myself snapping photos of post boxes during my travels, but I don't do anything with most of them. This time, my wife and I just spent last weekend in Oxford, England, and while there wasn't too much in the way of philatelic opportunities there overall, as a resourceful stamper, I was alertly on the lookout for anything of interest. As it happened, a mere block from our hotel was a beautiful condition KEVII era post box, still in service, and in excellent condition on the street corner. It was great to see such a real classic, still doing its duty for sovereign and country! I noted from the last post in this thread made by sherro back in Feb-2019, that the example of the KEVII post box he had seen in 2014 had been welded shut with a closed sign over the slot, and had been painted pink. I was glad to see that this one was still fully operational, and looking to be in top form. Long live the King! Edit: After additional review of Sherro's last post, I see that he also saw a KEVII post box still in service, in addition to the one which had been welded shut. OK, well, I like the paint job on this one extremely well, as it happens.....

Post Boxes of France 1850-1930 Display at the "Fête du Timbre" (National Stamp Day), March 2019Back in March, Xavier ( hrdoktorx) and I went to the nationwide stamp day here in France, and at the exhibition in Sisteron, we found a nice display of French post box history, complete with some examples from representative eras. This was a great large table-top display, and these photos only cover part of it. Some great pieces of history were shown here. Table-top display dedicated to post boxes of France. A very early France post box circa 1850. France post box circa 1900, which was so detailed that it displayed which day of the week it was, how many pick-ups scheduled that day, and how many had been completed. France post box from a rural area, circa 1911.
