On the early evening of 5 August 1909, President Taft signed into law the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act. This law was "a bill raising certain tariffs on goods entering the United States." (wikipedia) A side effect seems to have been the production of a number of tobacco related tax stamps, one of which is this cool 1910 snuff stamp. The stamp is overprinted "Fact. No. 4 / Dec. 15th / 1917 / 6th Dist., N.J."
I don't know much about these kinds of stamps, but I am looking forward to learning.

Arkansas 2 1/2 cigarette stamp. Looks like the revenue benefited local schools.
