What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

Thanks to some great posts by Anping in the thread "Aden: Views of the Colony", I learned that stamps of India were originally used in Aden prior to the issuance of the Colony's first stamps in 1937. Anping showed some nice KGV examples on picture postcards of the Colony. This past weekend, I spent my time going through a pile of old stamps from British India, and as I was looking at them for dated postmarks, I found two which were used in Aden. I was also pleased to learn that the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue lists these "precursor" stamps as well, and that the values are considerably higher for stamps with Aden postmarks than what a typical used copy of the stamp would be. In this case, India Scott #45, 12 annas, violet on red is listed as Aden #A50, which has a nice "Aden Cantonment" SON cancellation dated 20-Nov-1891. The second example is India Scott #48, 2 annas 6 pies, green which is listed as Aden #A53, cancelled on 18-Oct-1898. Anyway, thanks to Anping for previously posting about the usage of India stamps in Aden, as I doubt that I would have spotted these for what they really are in former times.

What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

Beryllium Guy - I love your post - just as I love these kind of postmarks. I think of them as 'forerunners' for Aden, as they did not have their separate stamps at that time. Similar forerunners can be found on stamps from lots of Colonial countries, like UK, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Turkey and so forth - and I find this among the most interesting aspects of collecting WW stamps. I treat each and one I find as a treasure They are not necessarily worth very much in terms of retail value, maybe because not too many collectors are actively purchasing them, however their evidence of postal history is more valuable for me. Your post points to a known issue - many collectors are not aware that Indian stamps were used outside India itself, which also means one can find collections offered for sale with such forerunners hidden in them but not highlighted or commented by the seller. I've picked up a few Zanzibar, Nepal and Aden forerunners this way. Unfortunately I lost out on a lot that had 2 nice postmarks from Singapore ('B-172') hidden in it - probably because another buyer identified the same Singapore postmarks as well! I haven't come across any other Singapore ones since then, but for sure I'll keep looking. Your stamps and Aden postmarks are beautiful - lucky you! My own Aden forerunners are at home (whilst I am offshore at work), so cannot share my examples at this time, but I do not remember mine being as nice as yours. I am excited to see any other post on this thread, thanks for starting it. Jon

I am glad that you like the thread. As it happens, I sent these two stamps shown in the earlier post to Clive Smyth ( Anping ) for Christmas last year, so I no longer have them. As he recently passed away, they are now part of his estate, so I have no idea where they will eventually end up. My only regret is that he had so little time to enjoy them.... I wanted Clive to have them, as he was one of my favorite TSF friends, and I wanted to do something nice for him. You can read a little bit about it here: thestampforum.boards.net/post/52203/thread

That's a generous act, Chris. I am saddened to hear about Anping, even stamps are insignificant in the end. I never knew him so it's good to see his legacy on interesting stamps lives on in this forum.

I never knew him so it's good to see his legacy on interesting stamps lives on in this forum. Hi, Jon ( blaamand) and Gavin ( feebletodix): Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed your posts in the Postmarks from around the world thread of Aden "forerunners", i.e. stamps of India postmarked in the Aden Cantonment/Protectorate. thestampforum.boards.net/post/64679/threadthestampforum.boards.net/post/64680/threadI started this thread a year ago tomorrow, and I did it at the time to honor Clive ( Anping), who was a specialist in Aden and Hong Kong, and he is the one who first taught me about looking for forerunner postmarks among used stamps. Prior to that time, I never paid attention. Sadly, Clive passed away last June, and his health was already declining at the point when I created this thread, that he never posted any of his own forerunners here. So, I am asking you both now, if you would please re-post your Aden forerunners in this thread in honor of Clive and to make them more easily found by others who might search for them on TSF in the future. With sincere thanks, Chris

I know he would love us talking about him in such a way and would love items that he never got the chance to post to be seen by others. I guess I will always miss him. thestampforum.boards.net/thread/5395/clive-smyth-anping-ningpo-1956
