Hello all, I'm a born again collector from Northern California, returning to stamps after about a 50 year absence. My interest was rekindled when my brother in law gave me an apple box full of his stamp collection. The housework and laundry are piling up due to spending my days soaking and sorting. My interest in stamps first began around 1950 when I received a stamp album and one of those big bags of loose stamps for my birthday. I collected mostly worldwide until sometime in my later teens I decided to specialize in U.S. Eventually marriage and kids happened and the stamp collection was relegated to a box in the attic. It has followed me through many moves; I now have the urge to locate it-- I know it's around here somewhere. My brother in law's collection has inspired the world wide bug as there is such a wonderful variety. I've counted stamps from over 70 countries already and it appeared he specialized in Swiss stamps from the 1960s to 1980s.
I don't know how much I can contribute to the forum as things in this hobby have changed so much; I have a lot to learn.

judith, Welcome to our Forum! Your story sounds so familiar as many of us stopped collecting when life's demands took center stage. Please don't limit your participation because you don't feel you can contribute -- asking questions will help you "catch up" and also aid the learning of those who remain in the shadows because they don't feel they can contribute. Your membership status has been adjusted so you can participate in most other areas of the forum so don't hesitate to engage. p.s., Good luck in finding that box.

Welcome Judith! I very much enjoyed hearing about your story. In my case an old shipping crate filled with stamps followed me around for about 50 years until after retirement.

Welcome Judith,
i am a fairly new member of the forum and have had lots of help from the wonderful members here. From the start, I was encouraged to ask questions . I am glad I did. Like you, I cam back to stamp collecting after a long absence. Yes, things have changed quite a bit. I do find a lot of things are still the same. We collectors are passionate about our hobby and are very giving of time to offer help and advice. Happy Collecting.

Welcome, Judith, and thanks for your nice intro post! As others have also said, your story is not unlike my own. I was away from collecting for a couple of decades, and when I first got back into it, I decided to specialize in U.S. stamps from the classic period. That only lasted for a couple of years before I found myself back into worldwide collecting, for similar reasons to what you have cited. As it happens, I also lived in the SF Bay Area for more than 15 years at one point, mostly in San Leandro. Where in Northern California are you? Is it the SF Bay Area, or somewhere between there and the Oregon state line? It is a beautiful part of the world, and I really enjoyed my time there.... Anyway, welcome to TSF! I look forward to seeing some posts of your favorite material. And as others have said, please don't hesitate to ask any stamp-related questions that come to mind. TSF is a great place for asking and receiving! Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

Born and raised in Berkeley; now out in the valley south of Sacramento. All my life I thought Cinderella and Bob were people......now I find them residing in my box of stamps.
