What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930
|
Post by Beryllium Guy on Dec 27, 2017 6:11:04 GMT
Thanks to theamateurphilatelist and bobby1948 for inspiring me to start this thread. Manish and I have discussed classic India stamps on multiple PMs, and Bobby sent me some stamps of classic India in his "Big Blue Volume 1 Giveaway", which I have now integrated into my own "Big Blue" Part I, so these on this post are 1930-1940 issues. As with my recent posts on classic France, those of you familiar with the blue cover Scott International albums will see that I have once again taken some liberties with use of the spaces, as I have mounted some official stamps in the regular postage stamp section. I felt that I needed to do that since Scott did not include any spaces in the blue cover album for these larger size official stamps, and unfortunately, the stamps in question (Scott #O90 & #O91) were issued just outside of the time period for inclusion in my brown cover Scott International album for 1920-1929.

Awesome Chris. I don't have access to Big Blue but the Indian catalogues list many variations in color and all the service and OHMS overprints. Also watch out for watermarks, there are variations in those too.

Couple of rather grubby in-need-of-a-wash earlies of India !! (Yes, I will get around to it). I still have the exciting job of sorting out all the India and States and am looking forward to getting confused and beaten !! But it's all good fun.

Lots more to come. India is quite a tough country for the Commonwealth novice !! (Me). I don't believe I checked the watermarks of the KGV High values. I will do so this evening.

The later multiple star watermark came around in 1926 and some of those postmarks are earlier, a very nice find, there are shades as well

Both types are within my time frame, but it makes a difference, of course. They are all from the first issue (single star) except the 25r bottom left stamp which is from the 2nd series (multiple stars). So left to right, SG#186,190,191 and SG#219,189,188 Londonbus1

I was just going through the Asia section and cleaning up threads and looking for 'lost' pictures when I came across this thread. I never did add to it but what I wanted to say was that all the stamps I showed here and all the others (that I wanted to post up) have now been sold and reside in...……..India !!
They all went back home !

I recently picked up a small lot of Queen Victoria stamps. Here is one of them... Canada has squared-circle cancels, but here is a circled-square cancel. Does anyone have any insights to this East India cancel?

brightonpete - That's a nice strike! India is a complicated but interesting area when it comes to postmarks, with a huge variety of different styles of postmarks. Even the so-called "circled squares" also comes in different sizes and different numbers of bars etc. I believe yours is part of a Cooper Type 9-C Duplex Cancel of Madras. Would need an expert to verify.

(See previous post for image.) The postmark is Renouf/Cooper/Martin type 4 barred rhombic cancel with numerical code 33 of Br. Indian Post Office of Dholera (22.2499°N 72.1934°E), now located in Ahmadabad district of Gujarat state. This very cancel of Dholera was officially introduced in Oct 1855 and discontinued in 1865. The manuscript annotation on the stamp is in Gujarati script which reads પોરબન્દર પહચ (Porbandar Pahach) meaning "To Reach Porbandar", written by the sender. So, the cover on which this stamp was affixed, was sent from Dholera to Porbandar. The Br. Indian Porbandar PO was established inside the territory of Indian Feudatory State of Porbandar. Porbandar (21.6417°N 69.6293°E) is now in Porbandar district of Gujarat state. ½A was the basic inland postage for weight upto 2.92gm (¼ tola), the rate in effect from Oct 1,1854 to Mar 31,1869 and most of the inland covers during the period 1854–1873 were in 1st weight step.

Trivia: The Indian Feudatory State (IFS) of Porbandar planned to issue postage stamps for the State Public Post in 1943 but did not.
After IFS Jasdan successfully introduced the Darbari Tapal (i.e. State Post) on Mar 15,1942, Porbandar state also thought of introducing postal service and postage stamps for which the Diwan (i.e. Prime Minister) of Porbandar wrote a letter on Oct 12,1943 to the Diwan of Jasdan to get full details as to how Jasdan successfully established the Tapal. Jasdan replied with full particulars in a letter dt. Nov 14,1943 but Porbandar did not proceed further.

Porbandar probably didn't get to the essay stage?

Yes, there was not enough fund in the state treasury to implement the plan.

Not a very lively thread this one so here are a couple of additions to give it a bump / and a piece just held together by the backing paper cancelled with the squared "52" of POONA At that time, to discourage removal of stamps by low paid clerks for resale, the writer often signed or wrote, as in this case, the word " stamped " before it was taken to the post office

A couple of QV stamps here. I believe they are postmarked Bandarabas? I reckon a S. G 58, 1865 1A and a S. G 93, 1882 3A. The 1A has an interesting red mark on it which I can't quit decide if its a secondary cancellation?

I believe the red cancel is part of a London E.C. PAID mark Thanks, I had suspicion it was a sort of 'paid' mark. Here's another QV I was cleaning up last night. Unfortunately, I didn't spot the damaged corner.. It came away while removing some paper from the back. Gutted.

thanks - shows what happens when we act too quickly - I'll delete and sort, then hopefully re-post once I've isolated the unrelated stamps.
