I've previously posted a Packet Mail cover from the Robert E. Lee in a different thread. I've been acquiring more of these types of covers as I've expanded my specialty U58 and U59 cover collection so I thought I would start a new thread for anyone who has these type of covers and want to post them as well. If you don't have any then hopefully you will enjoy the ones that do get posted...Please I would love to see others! Here the latest cover I picked up through APS sales. I haven't done much research on it yet but it is from 1896 and was posted in Alaska to Vermont via Seattle. It was first carried on a Yukon steamboat named Portus B. Weare (see reverse for Agent Stamp). It was then posted in the mail in Seattle where it received the front handstamp for 2c due. I've never seen anything like it and have not found any other close example in my brief web search. I hope you like it and will contribute more to this thread!

This got my attention; sent relatively close to home. A tidy pre-UPU, pre-paid from Geneva to the US. Sent 3 June 1871, forwarded by British Packet 18 June, answered from Accomack Virginia on 17 July.
The big enigma is what on Earth was this farmer/lawyer on the isolated Eastern Shore doing that involved Geneva? My best hope is to drive two hours north to Accomack County and quiz the Library.
And the big philatelic question: which ship brought this over? Anyone know where to go for info on Nineteenth Century trans-Atlantic ship departures from the UK?

Can’t answer your questions kasvik as to why or how, but in case anyone misses it the red mark reads. “LONDON PAID ALL” not strictly a ship or paquebot mark , though of course it would have had to go on a steamer to cross to America. please ignore this post I was wrong and mis read the mark …….see post which follows .

As for JeffS briefly misreading, you hit a splinter stuck under my nail. How did clerks make sense of this illegible stuff back in the day? Senders did them no favors, routinely addressing international mail to the city alone, even obscure villages. And this before return addresses were common.
I imagine a perplexed clerk in a major post office, shrugging hopelessly, walking it upstairs to some ancient badger reading the news in his dark backroom. Still speaking with the incomprehensible accent of his homeland, he sniffs arrogantly before proclaiming 'Austrian Bessarabia, you fool. Double weight.' Like me missing London Paid All.

Actually kasvik I was wrong with the red mark !…………it cannot be a UK London date stamp . I am surprised no one challenged me☹️ Closer examination shows I was in a hurry to comment and have mis read it. NEW YORK PAID ALL, it is of course, and that makes much more sense. Recognition that the Swiss stamp is accepted by USPS and no further Fee is due for delivery in VA

After a fussy couple weeks, this arrived, and I was ready for distraction. This ship letter caught my attention with Finnish stamps canceled. Where? Sisimiut, formerly Holsteinsborg, turns out to be on the west coast of Greenland. The cover is plainly philatelic, but sufficiently weird for me. The ship was a smallish bulk freighter, operated by the Gustaf Erikson line out of Åland. Thus the Finnish stamps, cancelled on arrival in Greenland, as per packet boat practice. The recipient, Johan Kull, was a prominent Finnish postal historian and a maritime officer, probably sending to himself. The internet is mighty handy!
What was the M/S Evocrystal doing in Greenland? Scratching turned up this nugget, 'The economy is dependent on the fishing sector which contributes 90 per cent to the GDP and forms the principal export commodity. Minerals like iron, uranium, copper, aluminum and titanium are found in abundance.' Maybe.
