 THE FLAG OF LEBANONThe Lebanese Republic gained their Independence from France in November 1943, and less than a month later a new National Flag was adopted. Until then, a French Tricolor, with a Cedar of Lebanon tree in the white band, had been in use. The Cedar was coloured all-over green but variants in other colours were also used. 
(Courtesy FOTW) The symbol of a Cedar Tree, an ancient symbol of Lebanon since biblical times became the centrepiece for the new Flag too. It is thought that the colours of the red and white bands were those of the Lebanese Legion during WWI. The white represents Purity and Peace; The red Bands represent the sacrifices of the people for Independence and the Cedar of Lebanon symbolizes Happiness, Holiness and Prosperity. DETAILS
Flag ratio 2:3 The Red Bands together are equal in thickness to the white band, hence 1:2:1 The Cedar Tree is one third the width of the flag. The Cedar is officially green all over and at this point, and for many years since, I have been confused. Many National and local flags have variants for whatever reason. However, the Flag of Lebanon can be seen with the trunk of the tree in Brown often including on most of the stamps shown below !! The current Flag was drawn up by Parliament member Henri Pharaon and some deputies during their work shortly after Independence. As you can see, the trunk of the tree is also Brown !!

They have issued some very nice stamps depicting both their own and other Flags.  1946 Victory Issue but without 'V'  1963 20th Anniversary of Independence  1967 Commemoration of Lebanon joining the UN (founder member) in 1945. The San Francisco Pact/Treaty. (Beautiful design)  1967 celebrating the 22nd Anniversary of the Arab League Pact.  1980 Army Day issue, Air. I am sure to add more to this another time, but I hope you have enjoyed this quick review of the Flag of Lebanon.....as a Thank you to Bombadil for his excellent Tyre write-up. Thank you very much for starting this thread, LB1. I agree with Bombadil: I love this post, too! I am especially grateful because I realized yesterday as I was sorting, organizing, and scanning all of the old Scott album merchant flag labels, that there was not a label from Lebanon in that set of 88, and I was going to have to break it to Bombadil. But you have now saved me from having to do that, so thank you!! |

What year is the album ? I did not show the Flag used between the end of the Ottoman Empire and 1920, when the French tri-colore was put into use. it was a plain white Flag with a central Green (all over) Cedar Tree. What year is the album?LB1, the album was published in 1930, so the flag set would have been printed around that time or earlier. |

It only seems natural to show some of the versions of the national symbol used on the many definitive series over the years.
1925/1927(French o/p)/1928(bilingual o/p)/1928(bilingual o/p + surcharge)
 1930  1937-1940  1946-1947  1947  1948  1949  1950  1951  1952 (first 0p.50 is suspect fake)  1953  1954  1955 (March)  1955 (Sept)  1956 As 2p.50 above but without designer's name and with I.C.Beyrouth imprint. Missing from my collection.
1957  1957-60 (some missing)  1958-59  1961  1961 (Aug)  1964  There is a break until 1967 when the cedar reappears, but on a postage due label series, then you have to wait until 1974 for the next:  1984  1989  The series of 1999-2002 has a cedar in its design and I will try and show these later. |

And continuing on from my previous contribution, this recent issue seems to be relying on the cedar to identify the country of issue, in place of the country name in Latin letters, as required by UPU rules. 4th Arab Economic & Social Development Summit, Beirut.
Issued 25th November 2020.
