Gotta ask Mdroth I noticed the color difference in the 3 par overprints (Austria). Are they indeed different numbers or color fades?
The ones mounted look paler than the ones on your stock sheet.

I noticed the color difference in the 3 par overprints (Austria). Are they indeed different numbers or color fades? Huh?? Not sure which stamps you're talking about? The 10 para overprints on the 3 soldi? I believe they are all the same Scott #. (I haven't gotten into these in any level of detail as yet - still a blossoming/in-process type of collection!) I believe they are all 'Type II' - the common variety. The scans on the album page & on the vario page will obviously distort things a bit as well. There is likely also some fading/environmental issues at work. But there's no 10 para overprint on a 3 Soldi on the vario sheet - only a 10 para on 3 kreuzer. (??) Do you mean the 30 para?? I think those are all the same - Scott #45 - and color differences explained as above... If something else? Let me know??

I love this thread. Thanks for starting it, mdroth Before issuing seperate stamps for the Levant, Austria simply used her own stamps in the PO's abroad - or stamps of Lombardy and Venetia. Here is one I came across today (while looking for something completely else...) - and I just had to purchase it immediately. Stamp of Lombardy and Venetia, cancelled: 'COL VAPORE D'ALESSANDRIA' The stamp to the left is the one I got. The sample on the right is not mine, just an image I found to display the complete postmark. So, probably cancelled on a Steamer arriving from or to Alexandria, Egypt. I'm a sailor myself, so I'm very fascinated by Maritime Postal history. In this particular case I am unsure of the application of the postmark - whether the cancellation was apllied in Austria, upon a vessel arriving from Alexandria - or when a vessel was arriving in Alexandria. Maybe some of the members here will know? Thanks for looking

Inspired by the fabulous display and collection of mdroth , I did some shopping myself the last few days I have been trying to find some readable and at the same time affordable postmarks from various Austrian Post Offices in the Levant, particularily from the more difficult ones in Romania, Bulgaria and Albania. It's really interesting to chase through Levant lots offered for sale and try to find different postmarks. I've found a few with postmarks from different Lloyd (Austrian Steaming company) offices, and some with 'Letere arivate via mare' cancellations, indicating maritime mail, and I love them! I also obtained this postmark as part of a larger selection, and I am very curious to find out what postmark this is. I am not able to identify it . The oval "COL VAPORE DA SMIRNE“ postmark shown is the closest or most similar postmark I have found yet, but obviously it is not identical to the one on my stamp. I was hoping someone of you guys can help. Or even better, can point me in a good direction for a useful reference of Postmarks used in Austrian offices in the Levant ( and preferably for all of Austrian Empire...) Maybe @falshung would know? It seems the large letters in the centre of the postmark starts with either Ll (Lloyds?) or LE (LEVANT?) And the letters at the bottom ends with '...TA' (Galata? Quaranta?) Any detective work appreciated!!

Btw..... here's a few different postmarks/places I've picked up, tough they've not arrived in my mailbox quite yet. (The image is a digital composition/selection of indivudal stamps cropped from 10 different Levant lots...) These will eventually sit in my collection as forerunners / siderunners for the various countries.

As for postmark catalogs, I am not aware of a comprehensive one. Edwin Muller wrote many books on postmarks of various areas under Austrian influence up to about 1930

Thanks for that @falshung ! I already have quite an extensive list, but it seems there are a few more on your list. Much appreciated. Would anyone happen to know where to get Edwin Muller's work? Would anyone know if the good Mr Billing (Billings lists) did any work on Austrian Postal history, postmarks etc ? Any help on the interesting Austrian Levant postmarks is highly appreciated Jon
