Hi All, I'm fairly new to collecting (and completely new to forums), so please have patience with me. I live close to Perth, Scotland and a few years ago started hanging onto the "pretty" stamps that I got through the post, such as the Hong Kong birds etc. After a while I started to put them in albums and trying to find it more about them. Over the last few months (of this year, really), I've become most interested in GB (and a bit of NL), definitives, and would really like to try and gather one of each all the way through. I'm not overly worried about mint etc, just so long as I like the look of them. The thought of the history that goes with them is something very appealing. (For this reason I i also like used postcards which I've been collecting in parallel). Eventually I'd also like to collect local cancel marks, but that's probably some time in the future. I found this site after raking round on the net trying to learn about the various stamps and properly identify them using some of the pictures on the net to help with the colours I can't figure from the books and I came across this site. And thus, here i am. Many thanks for including me. I don't think I'll be much of a poster, sorry. I'll ask loads of questions, but at this point don't have a great deal to add. But I'll try. Thanks again, John b

Hi John, I'm glad that you found us and look forward to seeing how your collecting interests develop over time. I've adjusted your membership status so that you can now post in other areas of the forum. We've got a fair amount of information for beginning collectors in the General information category as well as a board specifically structured to allow members to ask questions about any area of interest to them. There are also two search engines associated with the forum that can often be put to good use. Don't hesitate to ask any questions that you may have as I think you'll find our members willing to do whatever is necessary to help you along your journey.

Welcome to the Forum, John-- I don't collect GB (gotta draw the line somewhere!), but have spent quite a bit of time sorting thru the defins for friends, and especially enjoyed the surprising diversity that was revealed on a little closer examination. This is a great place for philatelic support. --Alec MacCall (a New World misspelling of MacColl, originally from Lismore and Appin prior to the clearances)

I also don't collect GB but do collect Netherlands. I mostly go through lots of common stamps and enjoy inspecting and looking for variations with all of them.

Hi John, and welcome to the forum. I'm with you: I prefer used stamps (and postcards and covers) over new stamps because I love thinking of the journey that the piece of mail took. Maybe that stamp was affixed to a letter that brought a smile to someone's face, or maybe it was an important piece of financial correspondence. In my more mystical moments (or perhaps after a few beers), I imagine that mint stamps feel sad and unfulfilled because they are sitting around unused instead of helping a letter on its journey. Then after they fulfill their purpose they can retire to fill a space in someone's album, relaxing after a job well done.

Morning Bobby1948, Thanks for the welcome. Am very sorry, but I haven't a clue what a sloop is. Let me know and I'll figure it out. Cheers Jb

A "sloop" is a one-masted sailboat with a fore-and-aft mainsail and a jib. In 1966 the Beach Boys released a version of the Bahamian folk song "Sloop John B" on their album "Pet Sounds." Just an old curmudgeon's feeble attempt at humor.

I started collecting British Commonwealth in earnest (meaning mounting what I had) just recently with a focus on KGVI but sorta crept outward (earlier and later). I am in the market for a collection since I really do not have many...still need a lot of common stamps. Example page; The album pages are from Bill Steiner's web site.
