A few years back, I was given a couple of collections to add to my own. They both belonged to parents of friends of mine, and were given to me for free. Both of them date back to when they were children, so they are full of pre-1940 stamps from around the world. First thing I did was to add any U.S. stamps they contained to my own collection if I needed them, and I found some pretty good stuff. No real 'classics', but good stamps I didn't have. Lately, I've been looking through these albums again. I have 2 volumes of Scott International (big blue) from 1955, and another volume 1 from 1947. I'm guessing they were getting approvals back then, as there are many unused stamps...that were unfortunately hinged to the pages.
What has intrigue me, though, are the British commonwealth and empire stamps. I started a collection of Great Britain a year ago, and I'm now having fun finding all of these stamps from British colonies and possessions from the early 20th century. At least...I assume anything with a British monarch's head on it would be a British possession. I think I'd like to put these to an album of their own. Are there any albums out there that fit this bill? How about album pages that I could print? I'm interested in everyone's thoughts. Thanks!

- Stanley Gibbons albums but very overpriced, not flexible and expensive international shipping - Vario pages or something similar - a good choice until you see exactly what you have, flexible, no hinging and can be reused - Steiner pages that you print, although there are a lot of Commonwealth countries and could get pricey individually

For $50 you can get a 1 year membership on Stamp Albums Web (Steiner's site) and download all of the country files (for $75 you also get the files on CD). The advantage to using Steiner's pages is that you only have to print pages for which you have stamps.

I use these pages for most of my collection. I print what I need when necessary. For me it has been very economical and easy. I just organize my Commonwealth countries alphabetictally and those that have changed names are grouped together.

I use Steiner pages for my worldwide but have some pages organized by region (British Asia, etc.) It is supplemented with Vario pages used as staging areas. I abandoned expensive custom size binders/albums. They limit what you can do with a standard size paper. Yes, the layouts can be cramped but I am collecting not exhibiting. I can at least redo Steiner pages to add minor varieties, redo layout, etc. For the price of albums, you can buy a wide format laser printer.

I found this nice SG album a few years back with stamps for a very good price. Less than $20. It contains used copies of all Commomnwealth issues for the Coronation of 1953. I had most of the issues in mint form all ready. So I used this album as a base on how to organize my mint issues. I have just added page one image. It is 30 pages total.

This set of albums is on my wish list. SG King George V British Empire 1910-1936 in 8 volumes, hingeless. A mere £750. I wish they'd sell them individually so I can start filling at least one!

I make my own pages using Vario pages with non-stick labels that I print from my inkjet printer. The labels are formatted in Excel and include the various Commonwealth, Gibbons and Scott catalog numbers as well as information about the color, perforation, watermark or any other thing that is important.
If you want to see what many of the Gibbons shades look like for the British West Indies, and some King George VI issues, visit my web page index. It contains links to over 150 pages with more than 3,000 images.
