Senegal is a country on Africa’s west coast with a rich French colonial heritage and many natural attractions.Named after the Senegal River, the Republic of Senegal has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era.France began to expand into Senegal during the 1850s, and they remained until the country gained independence in 1960.The country has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, due to reform programs in 1994.Senegal also has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping. 1963-Butterflies in Natural Colors Scott # 221-226 CV £32 30 Fr -Charaxes varanes 45 Fr -Papilio nireus 50 Fr -Colotis danae 85 Fr -Epiphora bauhiniae(Moth) 100 Fr -Junonia hierta 500 Fr -Danaus chrysippus

FULA MARKET SERIES 1914-1933 This long-running series of stamps depicting a local market was first introduced in 1914 and would run until 1933.There were several reprints and surcharges, with many varieties which are not listed in all major catalogues. There are a total of 61 stamps, including two Red Cross issues. I haven,t managed to find all the different stamps yet,but they are not too expensive.I am more interested in obtaining nice cancellations. This is a page showing the new values from 1922-26.

Here is a cover from Senegal using stamps of the French General Colonies. Note the "SNG" postmark. Senegal had not quite gelled as a colony. There was St. Louis on the Senegal river, where this cover came from, using SNG postmarks, and then there was Goree island, using GOR postmarks. Dakar was established near Goree, and the colonies were merged around that city.

Are there any catalogs other than Maury that list the varieties of this issue?

Maury lists 3 types. In addition, several of the stamps issued in 1914 also come in chalk paper. I will try to illustrate them using the 4c value from 1914. In Type I, which appears only in the 1914 and 1922 sets, the central image is rectangular and fits into the frame. There is a point on top of the hut on the left. The image as a whole is not very clear: for a long time I thought it was a tower on a mountain in the background.

Type II is a half millimeter too wide for the frame, but is still rectangular. It shows up in 1920. The bucket in the lower left corner is wider than in the other types, but that detail is often obscured by the frame. A more consistent detail is how the lines forming the sky do not meet the tree.

Type III appears in stamps and printings after 1922. The central design is too large in both directions, and it is no longer perfectly rectangular. If you search for examples of each type, you will find that the differences between II and III are not that clearcut. A lot of stamps have characteristics in between them. Also, there are plate flaws galore.

I have a Dallay catalogue from 2005-2006 and it gives examples of the three types. There were similar stamps issued in 1913 from Ivory Coast and Mauritania, all by the same designer. There is no mention of any similar type of variety.

The designer, Joseph de la Neziere, drew similar stamps for all the French West African components (in addition to Senegal, Ivory Coast , and Mauritania, he designed French Guinea, Dahomey, and Upper Senegal and Niger - overprinted for Upper Volta, French Soudan, and Niger), as well as French Polynesia, Morocco, Lebanon, and Syria (and a couple for France).
I have looked for analogous varieties in the other countries but I understand that as Senegal emerged as a hub for airmail, there were a lot more printings and so the plates needed repair. The first round of stamps were printed with care, and used a kind of chalk paper pioneered in the Somali Coast. But after the war, quality went down. Type III is a mess compared to Type I.

A selection of cancellations from various locations in Senegal. There are two different cancellations from Dakar, the present day capital. The port city of Saint Louis was also the capital city of Mauritania and this cancel can be found on early Mauritania stamps.
