The United States Stamp Society defines a machine cancel as follows: A great online resource for help in identifying the various machine cancels in use in the U.S. in the late-19th century and early-20th century is the International Machine Cancel Society’s website. I've found three links accessible through the website to be of particular value in the identification process: The below article, published in the Boston Evening Transcript on March 19, 1898, provides insight into the contribution these machines to the Post Office Department's effort to serve a rapidly growing population. Here is a sampling of some early U.S. machine cancels:

This one I am unsure of but it is quite different from the others so it belongs in this spot. I'll of course edit it when I get it figured out. I believe it's an Milam and Holmes machine impression CORRECTION: Barry rectilinear with horizontal line cancel. Close up view: This one must be related: This cancel shown below was made by a machine sold by the International Postal Machine Company.

Really? CRAP! I used the Machine cancel finder on their page and that's where it led me. Thank you for the correction. I'll trust your word as I'm not as versed in these as say you an Russ. Thanks again!

I'm relatively sure it's a type of rectilinear but I know nothing more than that about it? The Cancel Society's database can't help me find this particular one because it's before 1900. Maybe one of our Cancel guru's (Steve) can help with an ID? Maybe not a Columbia rectilinear as it says: So maybe a Barry Rectilinear perhaps? Close up view: Of course it's hard to be absolute bu I believe these are the pin pricks from the machine grab pins. It says: CORRECTIONS ALWAYS WELCOME!

This slogan cancel was in use from 1924 to 1941. There are 32 different types and even more varieties of this cancellation and some even specialize/study it. "AIRMAIL SAVES TIME"Here is a great read on this and also a great revenue stamp write-up also if your so inclined to read it. www.rmpldenver.org/pdf_files/2010julaugscribblings.pdf

Don't feel too bad, I have to go back and forth on the possible options until I feel comfortable with my call -- I'm nowhere near as well-versed as Russ. The Milam/Holmes cancel doesn't have the additional horizontal bars above or below the city/date. Your Baltimore Sep 30, 1898 has all of the characteristics of a Barry rectilinear with a wavy line killer.

My going back and forth was a generalization of my process and did not refer to this particular cancel. The cancel in question is a Barry rectilinear.

I need reference material on the American flag cancellations and the machines that made them. I have a couple of them but there is one in particular that I would like a little more information about. I think it's most likely an American machine strike but I'm not positive.

The Machine Cancel Finder references a book by Frederick Langford as being the most comprehensive listing of flag cancels. William Barlow's exhibit also has quite a bit of information on the evolution of the flag cancels. Per the exhibit, American first introduced the "flag with halyard" in mid-1895.

Earliest US Machine Cancel Leavitt Type 1
Boston, Massachusetts September 5, 1877
Thomas Leavitt was the first to create a machine to speed the cancelling of mails. Most of his machines did not work well with envelopes, so that almost all Leavitt cancels can only be found on US POD postal cards.

Very scarce Hampden Cancelling Machine Company of Holyoke Mass. These cancelling machines were in operation from 1898-1905. This example is unusual to find escpecially since it is used as a received backstamp. Dated May 7, 1900 from Easton PA., it is the two line, small font variety. The second picture (front of cover is for reference).

I keep an eye out for those. Aside from being a handsome advertising cover this has an early machine cancel, which I have never seen used in Trenton (though I don't have the literature I need to learn more to hand). I believe it is American Postal Machine.

American Postal - Machine Cancel - 1891While not scarce these do not come up for sale very often. This is an American Postal machine cancel with vertical lines between the bars.

Time Cummings - Year in Killer Variety Corliss, WI (In operation from 1901-1923) Dated June 29, 19211921 is kind of a later date usage for these machine cancels, but it is likely that this machine cancel used to belong to a larger post office, and when they switched to a higher-capacity machine cancelling device, they were able to sell this machine to the smaller town of Corliss. This happened quite often in the 1920-30's.
