I must begin by saying that I am not a very social-media savvy person. In my professional life, I have used LinkedIn, but I have never had an account on Facebook, for example, even though I have been invited by friends on more than one occasion.
I ended up joining TSF by accident, really. I did a web search to find some specific information about stamps, and one of the hits that came up was to a post on TSF by Jerry B. Jerry made an offer to send out information to anyone who wanted it, but the catch was that you needed to be a member of TSF to get access. So, I joined.
It has been a great experience, being a member of TSF, but I digress.... It took me a while to figure out that I could make changes to my Profile settings which would change how often I would receive notifications of various happenings or which would change how my personal info was displayed, etc. For the most part, I think I have adjusted my settings the way I want them, but I suspect that there is still some functionality on the Forum of which I am not taking full advantage.
For example, what does it mean when you choose to "follow" another member on TSF? I have received notices now and then that another member has chosen to "follow" me, so I have, in turn, chosen to follow some other members myself. But other than getting notifications that I am now being followed, or have become "friends" with another member (occurs when two members choose to follow each other), does it mean anything at all?
I have been unable to determine that following or being followed has any impact on anything at all. But perhaps it is just my ignorance, and I need to adjust my settings in some way in order for there to be some impact?
On LinkedIn, for example, if I choose to follow someone, then I will receive notifications of all of their posts and updates, and it may open up the possibility to connect with that person, even if I would not otherwise be able to do that. As I understand it, it depends on the personal settings of the two members.
So, anyway, can anyone shed any light on this? Does following other members on TSF actually open up any other functionality which one would not otherwise have? Are there other features related to Profile settings or status which might not be obvious that might?
Any comments are welcome!
