1940 was the centenary of the penny black. Unfortunately with the War Great Britain had more pressing issues they were dealing with, even though the Penny Black was a significant event. Stamp clubs in the states and Canada did make an effort to honor the centenary of the first postage stamp with Cinderella Poster Stamps, some specialty catchets, and the World's fair in 1939/40 also addressed this. My interest was sparked by the stamp on stamps organization....article 9. I would enjoy communicating with those that have material that supports the recognition of this centenary through their collection/interest.

Welcome to our Forum!
Yours is an interesting collecting specialty. We've got a fair number of examples posted on our Cinderella board and I'm hopeful that you'll be able to add to the mix.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
May I ask what is the 'Stamp on Stamps organization.....article 9' ?
We don't have a thread specifically about 1940 Poster stamps commemorating the PB Centenary although there are many items scattered around a few threads like USA and Great Britain Philatelic Exhibitions and Penny Black reproductions.
I'd love to see some of yours so feel free to start an new thread on the topic which I will happily add to if at all possible.

Welcome to TSF, 1940PS! I am primarily a classic postage stamp collector, but have been learning to appreciate classic Cinderellas here on TSF as well, and some of my favorites are those which commemorate the centenary of the Penny Black, whether they were issued in 1940 or not! Anyway, I look forward to seeing some of your favorite material! Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

Apart from issuing a set of 6 stamps to celebrate the centenary of the Penny Black, GB did host the Stamp Centenary Exhibition in London in May 1940. Londonbus may have already shown the following cinderellas produced for this occasion in another thread: philately.ttrr.org/gb/gb04006.html

Article 9 can be found on the website for stamp on stamps (www.stampsonstamps.org/articles9.htm). There is a fairly complete inventory of material published by US stamp clubs in this article. My interest includes poster/Cinderella stamps that have been mailed during these shows. As I become more familiar with how to use this forum I will begin posting images.

I'd think that on cover usage would be extremely difficult to find -- how successful have you been in that regard?

I have been able to troll ebay and collect approximately 30 or so different covers - as well as several from Canada that have cachets that include both the penny black and the mulready envelope. I also was able to pick up a complete set of Pitney Bowes metered items that were developed for the celebration at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. There is material out there, but you have to spend the time to look for it - dealers typically don't spend time cataloging these things as they are not well centered, and unhinged, or tied into something like the anniversary of the UPU, etc.......
