I'm looking forward to a new source of insightful discussion about philately! My own collecting interests include US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Germany postage stamps. I steer pretty clear of the back of the book (other than airpost) type stuff.
I started collecting at 5 with the arrival of an international album and some stamps. Unfortunately, there was also a bottle of Elmer's glue near to hand so while I still have that album, it serves primarily as a reminder of what can go badly wrong in the combination of excitement and ignorance.
I continue to search out opportunities for real-world stamp interactions beyond stamp shows - which seem to be dramatically declining in number. And while tolerant of my hobby, none of my offspring have exhibited much interest in starting our own club.

Welcome to our Forum, Bob! Perhaps you can start a thread on how not to mount stamps and post a few images of your first collection. I hope this forum satisfies your itch for real-world interactions but that won't happen until you join in the discussions (your membership status has been adjusted to allow just that). I look forward to learning more about your collecting interests so please don't hesitate to share. Remember as well that we have an award-winning newsletter that is always in need of material.

Welcome!
i too would love to see what glued stamps look like on an album page. I will admit when I was much younger I used tape. With horrendous results. My mom then purchased a few packs of hinges.

Great intro post, Bob, and welcome to TSF! I love your comment about "what can go badly wrong in the combination of excitement and ignorance." A very nice turn of phrase there! I started collecting around age 7 or 8, and luckily for me, my Dad kept the Elmer's "glue-all" and the Scotch tape well away from the stamps and me. In fact, he had thoughtfully included a packet of Dennison stamp hinges with my original album and worldwide stamp packet, and I still remember his teaching me how to use the hinges right from the start. I still have the remains of that original pack of hinges, too, although the old album is long gone. Like the others, I am very interested in seeing anything you care to post about it, whether it is some scans/photos of your original stamps or some of your other favorite material. Again, welcome, and enjoy your time with us! Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy )

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I was well trained by my dad about using proper hinges but I have bought many old collections over the years often with glued and taped stamps. Saddest was a pre 1920 small album quite full of early European better stamps. I was able to salvage many when soaking off but also cried seeing some wonderful stamps disintegrate before my eyes. Picking old collections is therapeutic for me even if there is nothing of great value.

Hello again, Bob ( ryebob)! Thanks for your comment in the Shout Box: For the most part, the images in my reference library are for personal use, but I do admit that I have posted a few on the Forum, and I did include some in the article, too. I am not expecting the IP police to be coming after me anytime soon, but I guess we shall see. As I am not doing anything commercial with the images, i.e. not selling them or making money off of them in any way, I am imagining myself to be on relatively safe ground. Whenever I use an officially published image, I always look to see if it is in the public domain (or not) or if it needs a credit line, and I comply with that. It is difficult for me to imagine that images taken off eBay or other auction sites would be subject to some sort of IP restrictions, as these are simply items for sale. If you are concerned about this area, you might want to consider watching the video with a link found in this post (link below) and then deciding whether or not there is truly reason for concern: thestampforum.boards.net/post/112182/threadBottom line: Bob, it's nice to see that you have made a comment in the Shout Box since your last post on TSF back in Oct-2019. I really liked your original intro story, and I hope that you will consider participating more. Don't be a stranger!

Welcome to TSF ryebob.
I can identify with your philatelic start. I never used glue but I did have a few stamps that were really shiny where I used scotch tape to secure the little beauties. I started collecting stamps on Christmas day 1954, at the age of 5. My parents gave me one of those boxed beginner kits (Minkus) that included an album, a packet of stamps, a stamp identifier and a set of Flags and Coats of Arms stickers to apply in the appropriate locations in the album. I was addicted.
I've only been here for a few weeks but my advice would be to do lots of surfing and cruising through the topics until you come across familiar and interesting posts. They make a good jumping in point for discussions with whatever information you'd like to bring to the story.
Depending on how serious you like your discussions, look at the recent posts about the New Zealand Chalons. They may not be your cup of tea but they're a great example of the types of serious discussions you'll find here.
