What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...
|
Post by blaamand on Jun 7, 2018 18:32:19 GMT
Hi all, Just liked to introduce myself. I am just another general stamp maniac, collecting WW. I collect everything until date, however I more actively study and find enjoyment in the classical stuff pre-1900. Took up collecting again at age 30, however I did not realize then how hooked-on I would eventually become. Now I am 'infected' to such a level I am using most of my free time for stamping - and think of stamps when I am not with my thongs.... I do not particularily specialize in anything, however study many countries in closer detail and normally try to find more in-depth references than provided by general WW catalogs as Scott or Michel. I am making my own custom-made pages until 1940 to allow spaces for more varieties than offered in regular albums (or on the 'Steiner pages'). If I would have to mention my favourite countries: France and her Colonies, GB and Colonies, Portugal and Colonies, Canada, Scandinavia. Additionally I am creating Postmark collections for each country, trying to find as many different town CDS and Numeral Cancellations as possible. Needless to say, all this takes a whole lot of time, however completion is not my goal in any way or the other. I have no aspirations whatsoever of stamps being an investment, and do not think time=money when working with my stamps. My goal with stamps is purely for enjoyment. Nice to be here in your forum. I'm looking forward to get to know a few other 'stamp maniacs' - and get inspiration from you all. Regards, Jon Arendal, Norway

Thank you for the inspiring welcome, Gentlemen!
"Show us some of your pages".
Would love to, however I am at work offshore currently and do not have albums or recent images available. However I can share some examples of my custom-made pages, as I recently completed my pages for Brazil until 1940.
...hmmm, seems I cannot log on to the image host, it won't accept my username or e-mail address...suggestions?

Welcome! Check out a cool Norge/Noreg fjord image on my personalized stamp that I put as a banner image, at my Facebook group "Create personalized/personalised stamps". My friend, Marcel, who traveled there, said that Norway is the most scenic/photogenic European country, "fjords and all". π

Welcome to our Forum, Jon ( blaamand )! I've adjusted your membership status so you can now post in most other areas of the Forum. The reason you couldn't sign in to the image host is because you hadn't requested and I hadn't created an account for you (the sign in and password are different from what you use to sign in to the Forum). I'll create an account for you as soon as I can and will send you the sign in information. Here is a thread that describes the image host and also contains a link to directions on using the recently added plug-in. I just saw that you've used the Simple Image Upload plugin (the Add image to post button) to upload your album pages. Let me know if you'd prefer to continue using that host or want to use the TSF Image Host (the Upload images button).

Thanks Londonbus, I solved it now!
Tomiseksj - Thank you, much appreciated. I was not aware therre is a seperate log-in for the image hosting. Would be very useful to use your hosting rather than linking from my own Onedrive. I managed to share some images (above), however that was quite time-consuming so I would imagine uploading diurectly is easier. Thank you again

If you're a fan of dated cancellations then you'll have fun with our Postmark Calendar thread - over 4500 posts there, however, so it will take you a long time to read through them all. As I write this, our most recent post shows a Norwegian stamp! Ryan

Welcome! Check out a cool Norge/Noreg fjord image on my personalized stamp that I put as a banner image, at my Facebook group "Create personalized/personalised stamps". My friend, Marcel, who traveled there, said that Norway is the most scenic/photogenic European country, "fjords and all". π Wow, that's a lot of cool personalized stamps! Thanks for sharing - and for the welcome. I once attempted at creating a personlized stamp myself - another stamp-version of Torungen Lighthouse outside Arendal - the same lighthouse as on my avatar: I think many agree that Norway is scenic, many consider it the most scenic not only in Europe, particularily the Western and Northern parts. Examples given: www.google.no/search?q=scenic+norway&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi64K6wwcLbAhXEN8AKHXCgCLEQ_AUICigB&biw=1536&bih=810I live in Arendal at the South coast - not that scenic at all - however the weather is far better, so I prefer staying on the 'Costa del Sol of Norway'

Thanks for that, Ryan. Cool thread -will need a week to flip through it! For now my focus on the CDS have primarily been to find new place names, not too occupied with the date as such except looking for stamps cancelled at milestone dates, as dates for outbreak of war, change of consitution/reveolution etc. Will need to look more closely for dates also now...

I like your personalized stamp! Did you materialize it, or it remained a virtual design? Costa del Sol, eh? "Oh, soleil, soleil..." π

"Oh, soleil, soleil..." π Thanks, no I did not materialize it, just made it for fun in a moment of lack of inspiration for anything else Costa Del Sol....haha, just for fun as well. Tough it actually is the place in Norway with most hours of sunshine throughout the year I guess it's not what most of you think of as a tourist destination...but for Noggies it is the place to be during summertime. The last two weeks we've actually been having warmer weather and more sun than the proper Spanish Costa Del Sol, but that is absolutely abnormal.

Welcome to TSF, Jon! Sorry for being a bit slow to respond to your very fine intro post. I have been travelling between the south of France and California in the last couple of days, and I am still feeling the effects of jet-lag. As jomo already mentioned, I agree that the custom pages you have posted for Brazil are as beautifully designed and executed as they are impressive--well done to you! I think that if I could have pages as nice as those, I would abandon my Scott "brownies" and use yours instead. I really like the touches of illustrating the watermarks and fine points of design varieties, and also that you have allowed spaces for other varieties on the pages, too. I also wanted to mention that I have a special connection to Norway in my heart, as it was one of the first countries I ever visited outside of North America. I attended the Boy Scout World Jamboree in Lillehammer back in 1975, and those memories are strong with me to this day. In fact, I made a post on TSF about it here: thestampforum.boards.net/post/54506/threadAlso just wanted to say thanks for "liking" some of my old posts of classic stamps on a couple of threads. I hope to be making more of those in the future, but it will be tough for the next several months, as my collection will reside in California while I am living and working in France. We will eventually be reunited for good! I look forward to seeing more posts of your pages and stamps! I would also encourage you to either start a thread for your remarkable album pages or simply post them under the appropriate countries where they will be easier to find. Under the "General Discussion" board, there is a sub-board called "DIY" (Do It Yourself), which already has a number of threads about making custom album pages. Anyway, welcome again, Jon, and enjoy your time with us! Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

greaden and bobby1948 - Thank you for the kind words Beryllium GuyChris, Thank you so much for the warm welcome and your extensive reply. No worry for the delay - that's my middle name, I'm always busy and delayed responses is 'my normal' Nice to read you have good memories from your time in Norway. Things have changed dramatically here since then, with the oil revenues... for better or worse. Interesting that you are traveliing and bringing some stamps with you now and then - I do the same. I am working on fixed rota offshore, and most of the time I have for stamping is actually in the time off while at work, don't have much time when being home with the 4 kids, house, wife, dog, garden and the rest of it. Thank you for posting lot's of interesting threads. I have only scratched the surface in this forum yet, still lots more to read. Still, please post more of the same stuff I really like the way this forum is built up with different folders for continent and subfolders for each country. Makes life so much more easy when looking for info, I will stick to that for the future. Your kind words about my pages is much appreciated. The pages are obviously custom made for 'my nerdy needs' and personal preference, would not expect anyone else to fancy them. Previously I made my pages from scratch, but recently I have started to modify and expand on the Steiner pages. Steiner did an absolutely marvelous job for the general WW collectors, I just want more spaces beyond the major catalog numbers - and more reference etc availanle on the pages themselves about wmk's, varieties, perfs, catalog value etc - and at the same time not use more number of pages than necessarry. I know many find my pages much too densely populated as I normally condense the Steiner pages quite a lot, and at the same time adding lot of more boxes for varieties etc. I simply do this to save space, albums, shelfves required etc - and to reduce the need for flipping the pages too much in the album. Will post some more one of these days - at a more appropriate loacation. Working on pages for Afghanistan for the moment - tough going with the classic Lion heads! Cheers, Jon

One could but I keep a spreadsheet with a tabulation of everyone's quality and non-quality posts so any multiples wouldn't get you closer to full membership.

My first and only visit was in 1982 during a long summer train trip throughout Western Europe. Oslo was so beautiful, but expensive for a single 23-year-old on a budget. Not many Norwegian stamps picked up at that time, except for a few postcards sent to friends and family....now we have the Internet and this forum to help with our collecting! What progress!!! As an aside I hope this counts as a "quality" post, I didn't know there was a tabulation going on! :-) --Jim Wentzell stampguyaps177-681

jimwentzell - Thank you for the welcome. I do appreciate you using the word 'humble' - because 'humble' is exactly what I love about this place and you guys. Unlike some other forums....I really enjoy this forum as a place to meet humble and genuinly kind and helpful fellow collectors. Please let me know if you ever intend to visit Norway again - I would be pleased if I had the chance to assist in any way. Certainly, forum friends are often very helpful - particularily on this forum. If need be, I have more easy access to Norwegain stamps than you did during your inter-rail back then. Let me know if you are 'thin' on recent Norwegian stamps and I would be delighted to send a give-away.
