I have for some time been maintaining a listing of all Queen Victoria postage stamps that gives details of the registration dates, put to press dates, number of sheets printed etc etc and in addition also shows the earliest recorded use from each plate ...
A number of collectors may already be aware of the plate life listing from other groups, however, for those who are not it is available as a PDF book free for any one interested in this area of collecting
One useful feature of this PDF is that a dated example of a stamp can be narrowed down to the possible plates as others may have been put to press at a later date - thus it will narrow down the options that need to be checked
The latest version (updated today) can be viewed at this link which will take you to the main PDF page on my site The book will be found under Plate Life towards the bottom of the page
I hope this is useful to some here

The PDF has been updated with a lot of revisions to the earliest known dates for some of the surface printed issues There has also been some minor updates in some of the line engraved sections and certain areas through-out the document which should correct a few errors ...

The file has again been updated since I last posted - the link to the library section can be found above ...
The most recent updates are details relating to the 1d red plate number series overprinted CYPRUS
The details added are not extensive - but they at least make a start on getting this information listed ...

For those interested in the GB postage stamps of Queen Victoria - it will be very clear that condition / grade of the stamp will have a great effect on the value of a stamp on the open market in relation to the catalogue price.
Robson Lowe wrote about this in his 1952 encyclopedia and the principles that he mentions hold fast to this day ... However, many collectors neglect this area, just trusting to a set percentage of the catalogue value and in the same way, many of those items listed online (places such as eBay), follow the same percentage rules with no regard for centering or the cancellation ....
With Robson Lowes' information forming the backbone of this knowledge - the following web page has been put together so that all can get to grips with this subject matter Naturally there will be personal preference over which stamps fall into which grades - so one person may say that certain stamps should be swapped around - however, the page at least gives the information required and examples to show how a stamp should be graded by a collector / dealer prior to sale ....
hope this helps some as they build their collections ...

Another great source of information for the GB collector is the Post Office circulars and notices that were issued ....
The following is in no way a complete list but does start to provide some of the details on-line for those who like this sort of information ...
As a side note .... the details in the Plate Life PDF book have been updated and will be placed on line, probably in the new year ...

Once again - more new details have been received for the Plate Life book and all the updates that have been sent to me have now been checked and the entries revised as needed As always, the file can be found in the library section of my site at philatelicweb.com/library/index.htmlor a direct link to this PDF is philatelicweb.com/library/platelife20190408.pdfA great many collectors appear to be looking for these items now so the amount of information coming in has increased in recent times I hope that this all adds to the interest for collectors and it is certainly nice to have an item in the collection (even if a cheap stamp) where you can say 'this is the earliest known date of use' As with other places I have posted this file - if you find any errors or items that allow the information to be updated, just shout and I will make it happen Many thanks ...
