Spitsbergen is one of a group of Islands North of Norway. Local stamps were in use from late 1890's until 1912. They were printed by a Shipping Company that used the Island as a trade stop. (Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab). The Stamp (below) was issued in 1909 and one of a set of 3.

The Scandinavian countries were definitely a place for locals and most appear reasonably affordable but not easy to find. Norway had at least 22 locations. Yes there were 3 in the first set. It was apparently printed in 2 series with new designs, so I think the one posted by LB1 is from the 1st set.of 3

There is an earlier series of slightly different designs, including larger stamps, but they were inscribed 'Spidsbergen' ! A nice little collecting area.
