What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

The last strike you posted had me real confused for a while - I recognize B'Water as being an abbreviation for Bridgewater in Nova Scotia (found on postmarks from Halifax-line RPOs) so I headed straight to the Bridgewater & Middleton RPO listing in my Shaw catalogue and found nothing, then went to my copy of "A History of Canadian R.P.O.s" by L.F. Gillam and found that the Bridgewater & Middleton RPO hadn't run since 1932. It turns out there's a Blackwater Junction & Midland line in Ontario! Mystery solved.

For collectors who find RPO cancels on their own Canadian stamps, note that there is a considerable amount of information available from the BNAPS RPO Study Group. Especially useful is the mass of past issues of their newsletter. Ryan

What an excellant resource, thank you. Currently I have two catalogues on the floor and Catalogo CDD open on the PC trying to catch up with writing up my meagre Brazil collection so I shall add the site to my reading list for when I get to Canada (if I am still insane).

Hello Doug630, while many people think the sun shines out of ebay's fundament (not inlcuding me), it does not keep old sales which means your link will disappear. If you think the markings are worthy of inclusion then what you really need to do is copy the images to the TSF image host and then repost here.

Windows 7 is very user-UNfriendly for fiddling with images. Microsoft paid some of its stooges a quarter-mil a year to obfuscate and complicate what was perfectly workable and understandable in Windows XP...

Well, just for the record, I did follow the link, and I agree that it's a nice looking cover. As I don't collect covers, there isn't a whole lot more I can say about it, but I did want you to know that someone did take a look, at least. Thanks for sharing it!

I understand, when XP was no longer supported I bought a copy of Win7 and ran the upgrade path to Win10. Worth the time and effort if your hardware will support it.

I don't think the BNAPS site has a way of looking up RPO cancels online, no. The catalogue I use (Shaw) is now obsolete in the sense that the RPO study group uses their own catalogue, updated and much expanded. Their newsletters have frequent further updates to their own catalogue so it's definitely an evolving thing.
The Quebec, Roberval & Chicoutimi strike has a good rarity factor of 110 ("Rare") - that means a complete & readable cancel causes the stamp value to be multiplied by 110. And if you're keeping track, the "DON & WIN" is likely for the London & Wingham line, not London & Windsor - the "T1S" train & direction indicator is listed for the Wingham line but not the Windsor line (and there was no London & Winnipeg line ....).

1897 Queen Victoria Jubilee 3 Cent Carmine perf. 12 x 12
TOR. & OTTAWA C.P.R No. 2 - W (train direction) 19 July 1897
One reference text, "The Evolution of Imperial Penny Postage and The Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp" by R.B. Winmill lists over two hundred railway post office (RPO) cancels and would make for quite the specialised collection...

Ryan Given sherro 's earlier posting of a London & Wingham line cancel and to keep it all on track, I thought to share the same cancel only going in the opposite direction,
2¢ Imperial Penny Postage of 1898 -
London & Wingham M.C., "TIN" 25 September, 1899.
Happy collecting!
PS. jamesw's earlier posting of the hand-drawn "choo-choo" and my own readings of the Canadian Archives - Canada, by Train over the weekend were also part of the inspiration for posting...

Here are a few more R.P.O strikes on Canada's Imperial Penny Postage for the collection,
May 18, 1899 STREET. & ELORA / M.C. (Shaw-Ludlow Number – O330)
February 8, 1901 RENFREW & SHARBOT LAKE / M.C. (Shaw-Ludlow Number – O298)
April 19, 1899 TOR. & SAR. M.C. / No. 5 (Shaw-Ludlow Number – O404)
NIAG’A FALLS & LONDON Ry. P. O. (Shaw-Ludlow Number - O181)
February 4, 1899 OTT. & MAN. M.C. / O. & G. V. Ry. (Shaw-Ludlow Number - O235)
In addition to the BNAPS RPO Study Group that has already been referenced or the Lewis M. Ludlow text, "Catalogue of Canadian Railway Cancellations and Related Transportation Postmarks", if anyone has recommendations for further readings on the subject of Canadian Railway Post Office Cancels, please do share...

Here is the latest find and is a welcome addition to the collection of Canadian Railway Post Office Cancels on Canada's Imperial Penny Postage,
QUE. & CAMP. M.C. Local ‘E’ No. 20 State 3 | Dated January 28, 1899 ==========================================
The cancel itself is an unusual combination of the squared-circle and RPO; the question I have is, does this cancel count for one of the seven already known to exist on the map stamp or can we now say eight? I would like to think the latter and that discoveries are still possible even for the older or classic issues...

With the publication of the Squared Circle Postmarks of Canada, 6th edition by the (BNAPS) Squared Circle Study Group and updated information for 2020, I would come to learn that the above cancel is actually one of twenty-four which are currently known to be found on Canada's 2¢ Imperial Penny Postage. Additional details of the cancel including a full-hammer strike can be seen below,
QUE. & CAMP. M.C. LOCAL, No. 20, STATE 3 Strikes Off-Cover: 65 Strikes On Cover: 4 Rarity Factor (RF): 60

Here is a neat cover with its 2¢ Imperial Penny Postage Stamp tied with a RPO cancel along with script handwriting for the addressing that deserves an "A" for execution,
Moncton & Campbellton RPO Cancel (Shaw-Ludlow Number – M78)
Given that the Intercolonial and three other government-owned lines would be grouped under the umbrella of the Canadian Government Railways, later to form part of the Canadian National Railways (CNR) in 1897, there is plenty of material to read about the railway both in text and on-line...

Looks like we lost some great reference images from earlier postings in this thread :-( Here is one though that might start to fill in the gap and I could use some assistance in identifying. It would appear to be a N. BAY & S. STE. MARIE M.C. RPO cancel, but I am at a loss to identify the text within the blue circle. It does not appear to be "No." typically associated with a mail-car cancel, but instead begins with a "T"?
If not Shaw-Ludlow no. O199, what else could it be? Appreciate any others ideas, input or speculation...
Thanks and happy collecting!

I found my answer and it was in one of the early postings in this thread.
The cancel above is in fact Shaw-Ludlow no. O-199, a N. BAY & S. STE. MARIE M.C. RPO cancel and the text within the blue circle is "No.1". Using the TOR. & SAR. M.C. / No. 5 (Shaw-Ludlow no. O-404) as the example, one can clearly see how the text/number is positioned outwards as opposed to the rest of the cancel where the text points inwards.
It pays to read and the value of a library cannot be under-estimated...
Happy collecting!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I was drawn to The Stamp Forum while searching information about Railway Post Office cancel on this cover I bought this week. I had acquired it for the Liverpool cancel on the 1932 Britannia .13 cent stamp. It was fun researching and finding the history of the train through my home town.

After my previous post with a Canadian Railway Post Office cancel I discovered the other day that I actually had another example of the Halifax Bridgewater and Yarmouth post mark. This one is on the backside of this first day cover for the 1946 Peace issue. I rarely keep FDC's but this one was amongst my father's collection so I held on to it. As a registered cover it has a lot going on. To bad it does not have a cache.

The Halifax South Western Railway cancel on the back of this cover from my home town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia to Springfield, Massachusetts was an added bonus on this cover. Once again there is lots going with this cover. It began with a 1 cent (U15) postal stationary envelope and then a 1 cent (Sc 97) and 5 cent (Sc 99) stamp from the Quebec Tercentenary issue set to cover franking for a registered letter to the USA. Quite impressive that a letter could go from Liverpool, NS to Springfield, Mass. in 1908 in just 2 days.

Nice to see a full strike of a Canadian Railway Post Office (RPO) postmark; thanks for showing Hugh ( hdm1950). I cannot make out the Train n.º, perhaps an '8' or a '9'? Both, Canada's Imperial Penny Postage Issue and the Jubilee issues, with their larger format are ideal for postmark collectors as they can capture the entire hammer strike.
The stamp here is a great example and I look forward to seeing more...
Happy collecting!
