What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...
|
Post by blaamand on Aug 5, 2018 22:10:56 GMT
I found no separate thread for Guadeloupe, so why not create one ? Guadeloupe initially used regular stamps of France, later those of French General Colonies which in turn were replaced by separate issues for Guadeloupe only from 1884. In 1947 Guadeloupe became a department of France and once again started to use regular stamps of France. This is a pity for stamp collectors, as a 'stamp country' was lost, however good news for those of us collecting postmarks. I consider French stamps cancelled on Guadeloupe as stamps of Guadeloupe, but they are not easy to find. I've been searching for such stamps while going through thousands and thousands French stamp, and finally I found this one: Anybody else looking for stamps used in Guadeloupe - or Martinique?

More difficult to find now, in 1975 no problem. Fake ovpts. are also common If I was looking - probably Delcampe as #1 choice

Fake overprints ... Does anyone have a good reference for how to detect the forgeries?

'1975 no problem' I'm surprised this is no problem, as I cannot find anyone offering stamps used on Guadeloupe for sale. These stamps have been a problem for me in terms of simply finding them. Any clues how to?

Over 10,000 available. As for forgery overprints, stay away from high CV ones at low starting prices and only deal with sellers who have GOOD images and ample descriptions as to types etc. Sellers who specialize in French Colonies are better than general sellers, they know their product better. If they don't use PayPal - DON'T buy from them. If the term "Sold as Is" comes up - beware, the seller probably knows there is a problem

Thanks, but we might be talking past each other... or I might have misunderstood your first post. My apologies if I am being unclear when writing English. I was wondering how to find modern French stamps used on Guadeloupe, as indicated in '1975 no problem's. The separate issues for Guadeloupe itself are obviously no problem to find, but they ended in 1947. Stamps used on Guadeloupe after 1947 are more difficult. But the link to Delcamp was useful Though the majority of the stamps listed there are those of Guadeloupe itself, there are also a few of the modern French stamps used on Guadeloupe. Nice, time for some shopping!

Any clues how to? I was making reference that in 1975 Guadeloupe stamps were easy to find. Pre 1947 going back to 1905 were inexpensive and plentiful. I have no specific resource for post 1947 France stamps used on Guadeloupe.

Oh, my bad, I misunderstood. As you realise, English is not my tongue... Much too late response from me anyway, enjoying summer has had priority lately. Thanks NL1947.

And thanks to Jon for getting this thread started!

I figure that there must be stamps of France or of Guadeloupe postmarked Gustavia.

I would love to find a stamp (French, Swedish, Guadeloupe) used on St. Barthelemy island. I found one! This is a French Colonies stamp used on St. Barthelemy only a year after France took it over from Sweden.

That's a keeper greaden - Excellent postmark! I learned something new today as well, didn't realize Sweden had tiny Colony. I probably didn't know because the Swedes didn't issue stamp there

That's an interesting cover Bob, nice find. Quite peculiar how such an ordinary (and boring...) stamp can make part of something very desirable.

I consider French stamps cancelled on Guadeloupe as stamps of Guadeloupe, but they are not easy to find. I would love to find a stamp (French, Swedish, Guadeloupe) used on St. Barthelemy island. I've just found something while sorting the other night - the colour is messed up, my old wood-burning scanner does a poor job with yellowish colours when it's just a small portion of the stamp but to make up for it, it does a horrible job when it's the only colour ... oh well.
