I have some Italian classic cover I would like to show. The first has been sent from Milano Staz. (Station as in railway station?). Cant read the date, but I think it was sent in 1866. The stamp witch I think is Mi25II is canceled with number cancel 181. I don't have any resource or catalog to tell me what 181 stands for? The destination is Mantova.
On the backside it has a "arrived" cansel (what is the right name?) witch says MANTOVA 15/11. Is this just the date? no year.

Next one is Sent from Milano 27 mars 1866. also sent to Mantova. The stamp is Mi20, QUARANTA CENTESIMI (40 cent) issued 1863. The address is X-ed out? Wrong address? And there is no return address. But the backside has some More cancels, hard to read. One says MANTOVA 28/3? the two others I cant read, maybe the upper one says 1 ?

Ok, two more But those two don't have that nice cancels. But both are sent to MANTOVA? Stamps are 1: Mi26 2: Mi16 One more thing. All those five covers have the stamp on different places.

That's some adorable classic covers @tobben - thanks for sharing You're asking the name of the numeral postmark with dots in square around it. The Italians calls it "Numerale a Punti", Numeral in dots. The Italian Barred numeral is called "Numerale a Barre" Go to THIS SITE to find the name of the post offices for the Italian numeral postmarks. Jon THIS SITE gives useful general introduction to Italian postmarks, use Google translate...

I don't have any resource or catalog to tell me what 181 stands for? The destination is Mantova. I have an old Italian Postmark listing from 1933 and..
181, 3 possibilities -can be the Milano central station. It can also be rail and/or first class mail
17 indicates (Milan Raccomand.) which may be Raccomandata? or Registered. Also seen in blue or red 4500 numerals are listed!

The stamp is the 15 cent of king Vittorio Emanuele II of 1863 ovpt in 1865 to 20 cent. This stamp is called amongs collectors ''ferro di cavallo'' (horseshoe) . Thereare 3 different variety . 181 I think but I don't have a catalog with my right now, is the number of the cancellation stamp of Milano railway .

About this I'd like to make a guess, the letter is sent to a Marchese (marquis) Annibale Bavriani ...? at Palazzo Bavriani. Consider that the Marchese was a very well known nobleman and Mantova not a huge city in 1866, so the letter was delivered to a different address . .the same day .without the .need to write down the new address or collected at the post office by a servant. I want to say it again is only a guess . Of the 40 cent exist two runs : one from London by De la Rue and one from Turin Officina Carte Valori .

Side canceled with ordinary date cancel, 19 apr 68 (I think) The backside Has an arrived cancel MANTOVA 20 apr 68, the next day. They are called numeral cancellations, used by the post office of the kingdom of Italy between 1866 and 1889. The cancellation was formed by a number surrounded by bars or by points. The number show the starting point of the missive because it was different for each council .

I know it is of no philatelic interest but in this case we have the recipient's face. Monsignor Bignami Cav. Pietro Cappellano (Chaplain) della Real Casa (in this case Savoy House) indeed the palazzo reale is at monza. From a portrait oil on canvas of the painter Tranquillo Cremona. ..

Advertising stamps.. Sassone n.16 It is the least catalog value stamp, not frequent to find it on cover at least recently.
