What I collect: stamps, covers, postal cards from Canal Zone, early USA, Channel Islands
|
Post by stevew on Sept 4, 2018 13:18:18 GMT
Hi, I'm a new member from the mountain west of these United States of America. I collected stamps as a kid, but not active since then. Inherited a relative's collection 20 years ago, but kept them as is, boxed up. Recently decided to go through them, make sure they are not in a state where they will deteriorate (switching to archival materials where needed), identify the parts that interest me, and separate the rest to sell/trade/give away. The parts I'm interested in are US, Canal Zone and Hawaiian postal cards, and Canal Zone, early USA, and Channel Islands stamps. My relative assembled nice collections of these, and I'd like to fill in a few holes that remain. There are a few individual worldwide stamp groups I'll also keep because they're interesting, but I won't be actively collecting them. I also collect pre-20th century US ephemera, which is why the postal cards interest me. My family has a strong connection to the Canal Zone from construction to transfer to Panama, so I have a collection of lots of things from the Canal Zone including old family covers with enclosures, so the stamps and postal cards fit into that well.

Welcome to the fun. The Canal Zone interests me as well, being a sailor, but I don't have too much my self. Interesting you have that as a speciality. Please feel free to share some images of your collection, we all love to see others stuff and how it is organized

Welcome to the Forum.
I have had an interest in the Canal Zone since a was very young. Never was able to collect as I had no budget at the time. Some things never change. I look forward to seeing some of your collection. You are lucky to have the family connection.

Welcome to TSF, Steve ( stevew)! Good to have you here. So when you say the “Mountain West” in the US, where do you mean? I am also from the US, although currently living in France for a year on a work contract. My last longer term home in the US was in the Prescott, Arizona area, where we were at an elevation of about 5,200 feet (about 1,585 meters). Is that anything comparable to your situation? Just curious! Anyway, welcome again, and I am especially looking forward to seeing some of your Canal Zone collection! Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

And, Steve has the distinction of being our only member from Idaho! I don't mean to be argumentative, Steve, but are you sure about this? I thought that William ( wgthomus), our Germany Inflationary Period specialist, was also from Idaho. I thought I read that at one point, but failed to find the relevant post when I just did a quick search.
